Career Guidance Therapists in Ottawa, ON
Helpers, healthcare workers, teachers, social workers and caregivers in general are some of the most compassionate and dedicated people I know. They are so dedicated to the folks they support they often don't realize the effect it has on their own emotional health and well-being. Working the front lines of social services for 20 years, I witnessed the impacts of workplace stress, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and full body and emotional burnout that can come from this unique work.

As a therapy-goer myself, I understand how challenging it can be to find the right person to guide you on your healing journey. Before you read any further, take a moment to thank yourself for taking that first step—it’s a big one. As a Somali-Canadian Muslim woman, mother, and child of immigrants, I deeply understand the complexities of navigating intergenerational trauma, such as growing up in a single-parent home, facing poverty, living in social housing, and carrying the weight of self-parenting while reparenting those around you. Your burdens may feel overwhelming, but your past doesn’t have to define your future.

Having worked in a demanding corporate career for a decade prior to becoming a therapist, I specialize in helping type A anxious women tame their intellectualizing, overthinking brains
Are you stuck in a pattern of people-pleasing, overanalyzing, and intense anxiety / panic that feel impossible to control? Maybe you were the scapegoat in a family with emotionally immature parents, having to basically raise yourself? You keep trying harder, working harder, doing more, but you're exhausted and constantly walking on eggshells, waiting for the other shoe to drop. You've tried all the things - self-help, meditation, gym, yoga, breathwork, maybe self-medicating with substances - but nothing works for long. You're stuck in functional freeze, your nervous system is shut-down, and you long for a sense of safety

Hi, I’m Sherri. I work with adults who look like they are managing on the outside, but feel stressed, burned out, or emotionally worn down underneath. Maybe work is taking more out of you than it used to. You might be constantly on, overthinking, losing patience faster, or feeling like there is no space left to breathe. If you are carrying workplace stress, leadership pressure, anxiety, or the weight of always being the capable one, therapy can help you slow things down and find your footing again.

New Apr 2026: Are you a Type A, driven, hardworking woman who is quietly unraveling inside? No one sees your high-functioning anxiety or the trauma responses running the show. Your mind never stops, your body is always tense, and relaxation feels impossible. Praise doesn’t register. You wonder if maybe you have ADHD, depression, or just burnout - but deep down, your intuition knows somethings off. Maybe you grew up having to perform, stay small, or manage other people’s emotions. You’ve tried the walks, journaling, meditations... but your nervous system still feels stuck. You know you need to “love yourself”-you just don’t know how

Hi, I’m Margaret. I work with adults who feel changed by work, loss, or experiences they cannot easily explain to other people. Maybe you have seen too much, had to make impossible decisions, or left a role that once gave you purpose. You may feel ashamed, angry, numb, or unsure who you are without the profession that used to define you. Therapy can help you make sense of moral injury, occupational stress, and the grief that can come when your work or identity no longer feels the same.

Are you a smart, Type A, high-achieving woman in Ontario who powers through her day with coffee and adrenaline, responds to emails from your bed at night, who squeezes in the gym on a super packed day - while listening to a self-help podcast and placing an Instacart order at the same time? You operate at 200% until your battery suddenly dies and you can't hold a charge - no matter what you try. Your mind fixates on repetitive worries, both immediate (ie: was that email too direct?) and existential (what's the point of all this?). Living this way seems to have worked, but it's getting impossible to maintain. You're burned out.

Career Guidance Counsellors
How do I know if I need career counselling?
Determining whether a career counsellor is needed involves assessing one's current career and identifying what changes can be made to improve one's overall quality of life. In particular, feelings of loss of motivation, fatigue, anxiety, depression, procrastination, or ongoing levels of high stress can all be indicative of a need for career-related counselling. In addition, individuals changing jobs may want the decision-making support or self-reflection opportunities provided by a career counsellor.
Who can benefit from career counselling?
Anyone can benefit from the self-reflection, skill development, and stress management techniques that career counselling can provide. However, individuals who are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out with their current job and individuals considering a major career change may particularly benefit from career counselling to improve their wellbeing. Additionally, individuals who are facing issues in their current job, such as coworker relationship challenges or not meeting performance goals, may benefit from the perspective that a career counsellor can provide. College-age or young professionals may also uniquely benefit from career counselling as they make key decisions surrounding education and job training that will impact their career trajectory.
How long does career counselling typically last?
The length of career counselling can vary greatly depending on the needs of the individual and what type of support they are seeking Career coaching or advising services—which serve clients in a specific, goal-oriented capacity—often last for a shorter duration and are sometimes only a single session or a few sessions in length. In contrast, career counselling as part of a more integrative therapeutic relationship with a counsellor may last longer, particularly if the issues faced by the client are longstanding and/or more complex in nature; in such cases, individuals may expect therapy to last multiple months or longer.
How to prepare for career counselling?
Clients can prepare for career counselling sessions by outlining the specific topics they would like to address with the counsellor, such as current job challenges or hopes for the future of their career. Compiling one's thoughts on such topics often requires reflection on one's career and future goals, which in itself can be beneficial for session preparation. Clients may also want to put together a list of questions they would like to ask the counsellor, particularly if the career counsellor they are seeing has particular expertise in a given career area. Conducting research into potential future jobs, training opportunities, or support resources in one's area may also help clients prepare for career counselling by providing them with a background of what resources are available in their area.
