Hi, I'm Kim. I have worked with people across the age span, individually and in families, for the past few decades. I am currently working with people who are interested in finding ways to better cope with strong emotions, complex trauma, mood disorders and building stronger connections in their relationships. I have a long history of working with children, teenagers and young adults in particular and am often described as conversational, humorous and creative in my approach. I believe in being transparent, flexible, nonjudgmental and creating safe spaces where people feel heard and connected.

My approach is relational,
attachment-based
, and trauma-informed; I often use emotionally-focused, interpersonal, and narrative therapies in my practice.
Sometimes we are faced with challenges that can make it hard to live the life we want. In these difficult periods, therapy can provide an opportunity to connect with another person, explore the problems you may be facing, and figure out a path forward that works for you. My priority is creating a safe space between me and my clients, which means I approach every person and problem with respect, compassion, and without judgement. Regardless of how you feel right now, you (yes, you!) have strengths, expertise, and valuable experiences that I’m here to help you unearth, reclaim, or explore.

I ground my therapeutic approach in relational psychodynamic theory, and integrate experiential and
attachment-based
treatments.
Please Note: I am not able to provide services to new clients at this time. — I help those with low self-esteem, PTSD or relationship trauma to prioritize their needs, befriend their emotions, and find their inner voice. I strive not to hide behind a facade of professionalism, authority, or rigid treatments — I greatly value authenticity and aim always to be real with my clients. I have seen first-hand how individuals flourish when given the chance to explore and reframe their life stories. I hope that together we might create a space that is kind, genuine and yours, where you too can engage in this daring and valuable work.

Grounded in a client-centred,
attachment-based
framework, I draw on evidenced based therapies of: Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), Mindfulness, Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Do you find yourself replaying scenarios or feeling stuck in foggy thinking? During times of stress our experiences can seem confusing and overwhelming. Having a safe space to name what is happening helps to bring clarity to our experience. Whether you are working through a current stressor or an older wound, identifying thoughts and feelings helps us to understand our needs. I work with clients to identify automatic attachment patterns that may be maintaining attitudes and behaviours that are no longer helpful. Together we consider alternate ways of responding that help you to attain your needs and goals.

My primary practice uses an
attachment-based
psychodynamic approach which involves exploring early childhood learning and experiences, and their impact on adult behavioural patterns and defences.
Are you stuck in dysfunctional and self-sabotaging patterns? Do you have high expectations for yourself that you can never satisfy? Are you experiencing inner turmoil and outer irritability you can’t settle? Psychotherapy could help with these. I believe that self-understanding, the awareness of and ability to understand one’s actions and reactions, is important for personal transformation. Using a gentle, introspective approach, I provide clients with the space to be curious about their past and current experiences. I believe personal transformation can happen to everyone at any age.

I incorporate different approaches to psychotherapy, predominately working from the following approaches: psycho dynamic,
attachment-based
, and emotion(ally)-focused.
The journey of life holds many unexpected turns that can often lead to feeling lost, stuck and alone. I provide individuals and couples a safe and supportive space where they can slow down and connect to their internal resources. I believe that with the right support, each person has the capacity to grow and heal. I encourage my clients to explore how their life experiences are affecting their current circumstances, with the intention of moving toward a satisfying life with meaningful connections.

I have had extensive training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and integrate this approach with
attachment-based
, emotion-focused, and psychodynamic therapies to help you feel and live better.
Since 2009, I have enjoyed working with individuals who are experiencing conflict in their relationships (with others or within themselves), and those struggling with either overwhelming emotions or with feeling disconnected from them. I support clients in healing from traumatic life experiences, including abuse and neglect. I particularly enjoy helping men become better attuned to their emotional experience and develop more satisfying connections with others. I offer a compassionate, authentic space to explore the relationship ruptures, health complaints, and difficult emotions that contribute to your presenting concern.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
