Is there an aspect of your life that overwhelms you and leaves you feeling like you need help? Living life authentically often leads us to encounter these types of challenges. Sometimes we can trace the origin of our distress back to a particular event or experience such as a relationship or job dissatisfaction. Other times, the origins are more hidden and leave us scared and confused. This distress can take many forms, typically depression and
anxiety
. Talking openly in the safety and confidentiality of a therapeutic relationship can bring some relief.

Are you experiencing a period of life transition? Of indecision raising inner tensions? Are you looking to regain energy? Or interested in understanding patterns underlying your life? What if underneath day to day challenges lies an opportunity to understand yourself better? As we go through life, we must adapt to the demands of our environment, sometimes at the expense of our innate nature. This phenomenon may result in developing discomforts (such as
anxiety
and depression). Exploring the psyche provides an opportunity to re-enter into relation with all the aspects of our psyche, towards harmony with oneself and others.

I help adults struggling with
anxiety
, depression and adaptation to life challenges and losses. My focus is on creating a warm, non-judgemental and safe environment where you can unpack your painful experiences and examine emotions, thoughts and behaviours that might contribute to your suffering and isolation. My goal in psychotherapy is to help you to find balance and wholeness by accepting and incorporating all authentic parts of yourself, including shadows. A painful experience is an opportunity to wake up from familiar negative patterns and change them once and for all.

Your mind is constantly telling you that you need to do more, but it's hard just to get out of bed in the morning. Chronic pain makes everyday tasks really hard. Everyone around you seems normal and you wonder how they have it all together. Maybe family and friends are supportive, but you worry about being a burden. Or maybe your life is good on paper and nobody sees your struggles, nobody sees your pain. As someone who has lived with chronic pain and
anxiety
, I know how hard life can get. I understand how isolating it can all be.

We all love the challenges of working and thriving in Canada's capital. In this aim to please Ottawa lifestyle, we often do not take the time we need to take care of ourselves. For many people, the often hectic pace and stress of different aspects of our lives (career, boss[es], clients, children, spouse, parents) can add up and cause stress. This can lead to
anxiety
, depression and other painful challenges. I have helped Ottawans successfully understand and master the ways in which the many currents of their lives interact and impact their emotional health.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
