If you're looking for a therapist who can help you, your child, or teen find their voice and build resilience, I invite you to reach out to me.
Accepting new clients! - I have a passion for helping children, teens, and young adults navigate life's challenges. My approach is rooted in psychoanalytic theory, which allows me to delve deep into the unconscious mind to uncover the root causes of emotional distress. However, I also believe that creativity can be a powerful tool in therapy, which is why I incorporate art, play, and other expressive techniques into my work. However, I also draw on a range of other therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, to meet the unique needs of each client.

I especially love creatively adapting approaches to make them child and teen -friendly!.
In this high-paced world, people don’t take the time to sit and talk things through – especially their problems. I’m a strong believer in the importance of talking through your problems in order to process them and gain an understanding of not only your challenges, but also what’s important to you, your strengths, and your goals. I balance my approach of processing through dialogue with my love for concrete, practical interventions and strategies. My goal as your therapist is always to provide a non-judgemental space for you to explore your difficulties while also providing practical strategies to meet your needs.

We all experience stress. How we cope with stress either past or present is the challenge. It is possible to acquire coping strategies to not only reduce stress but to reach a place of happiness and resolution. I have been working with individual adults, adolescents, children, as well as, couples, and families for over 40 years. I see people who are concerned about a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, anger management, family and marital conflict, parenting, and behaviour management. I have been in positions of program manager, clinical director, and clinical consultant.

The transition to parenthood can be exciting, but can also bring on feelings of anxiety, overwhelm and doubt, and many mothers feel isolated, exhausted and alone. As moms, we've been there: struggling to conceive, postpartum anxiety, the desire to do everything “right”, the constant worry about baby and wondering if what you're feeling is normal. We work with individuals and couples in all phases of life, with a strong focus on the fertility, pregnancy, postpartum and parenting periods, and have received extensive Maternal Mental Health training and certification from Postpartum Support International in Perinatal Mental Health.

Before pursuing psychotherapy and counseling, I spent over ten years working with children/youth in the foster care system. There I gained experience working with individuals with complex trauma, FASD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. My area’s of interest include religious trauma, navigating anxiety and depression, grief processing, identity formation, emotional regulation, and self-esteem.

You have everything, yet nothing. You try to make meaning of your life, but deep down a feeling of emptiness lingers. You deeply want to feel a genuine sense of happiness, but sadness overwhelms you. The deep wound of your past has you in a state of depression, anxiety, anger, and chronic stress. You have uncontrollable thoughts you try to ignore but cannot. Living with a sense of peace is hard to gain and you are exhausted. These feelings are affecting your relationships, your employment, academic pursuits or just your ability to manage day to day activities. If this sounds familiar, I am here to help.

Hello! My name is Dana Stoiku. I am currently practicing at Head Family Counselling. I am happy to support individuals struggling with their mental health or want a safe space to openly express themselves. This may include struggling with anxiety, depression, managing anger, or difficulties with personal relationships (e.g., friends, family, intimate partner). If you need assistance in managing any of these, we can work together in finding coping strategies and skills that are best suited to your needs.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
