Parenting is hard, and no matter how much we ask, it doesn’t come with a manual. Childhood anxiety, depression, ADHD, teenage angst and everyday challenges are on the rise and learning where to go for help can be overwhelming. Despite our efforts, the resulting feelings of frustration and despair are very real. I have been there myself and understand that, like with learning any new skill, parenting takes work. Learning tools and applying them consistently while faced with numerous challenges requires support, compassion and gentle guidance. What's important to know is that you are not alone and that there is support available.

I assist parents by enhancing their emotion skills, utilizing their motivation and tuning into their parenting wisdom.
I am Registered Clinical Social Worker who specializes in working with children and their parents in what I believe is the hardest job – parenting ! It takes real courage and sacrifice to reach out and ask for help. Whether you are looking to help yourself or your child, this process brings up many challenging feelings. My hope is to support you and/or your child to look inward and navigate these emotions and identify the feelings that have been getting in the way. Instead of avoiding these feelings, we will work together to process them with the ultimate goal of experiencing real change, for yourself and your relationships

You are a parent of a child or teen who is struggling at school, home or elsewhere. Because of this, you doubt your abilities as a parent , argue with them more than you want to, and feel embarrassed or guilty about their behaviour. Children and teens deal with many of the issues that adults do (anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, learning challenges, grief, life transitions, relationship issues, emotional management) except with less skills and life experiences to help them cope. I work with families to manage the challenges that they are facing and move forward. I also work individually with adults on adult challenges.

I work with people experiencing infertility, high risk pregnancies, trauma, NICU hospitalization, transitions in relationships, parenting challenges, complex grief, workplace stress, and bereavement.
When we are feeling stuck, alone, or trapped with certain thoughts or ways of being, therapy can open up new possibilities. It can’t erase pain or grief, but it can help us move forward in meaningful directions, and it can help transform our relationship to our pain. During your time with me, you set the agenda, based on your preferences, needs, and hopes. You may come with an idea of what you want to work on, or we can discover it together. My goal is to create a compassionate and confidential space for you, your stories, and your process, where you’ll feel seen and heard, without judgement.

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
