In our fast changing world, it is hard for all of us to maintain our well-being while constantly being hit by profound waves of instability, be it pandemic, loss of loved ones, divorce, financial crisis, life transitions or relationship issues. As tender beings, such situations deeply affect our sense of security and belonging and lead us to isolation, sense of inadequacy, unworthiness, shame, anger, anxiety and feeling lost. It usually takes us years, trying all our solutions before we realize that healing is not a one-person process.

Are you always worried about what people think about you? Do you spend a lot of time catering to others? You don't seem to measure up, compared to others. Maybe you’ve found a formula to get people to keep you around except now you're exhausted and lonely. You feel pulled in different directions, scared to say no to others and terrified to make mistakes. This trapped feeling is making it harder to perform and life is scary without your game face on. You've worked so hard to reveal only the likeable parts of yourself. Even if it seems to be working, what if it isn’t enough and you’re on your way to being tossed aside?

In the four decades of my work in the mental health field I have learned to tailor my approach to the unique needs of the individuals with whom I work. My training in psychodynamic and interpersonal therapies has helped sensitize me to the complex developmental and family roots of our personalities and struggles. I will help you determine the kind of healing that is the best fit at the current stage of your life journey. I am aware that some people will want to consider medication as a complement to psychotherapy. Although I do not prescribe medication my experience enables me to guide a person who may wish to consider meds.

My ideal client is willing to engage in self-reflection, explore the deeper existential issues related to his/her predicament, and discover the pathways of actualizing his/her potential and dream. Such a client can be a new college graduate struggling for a better understanding of her self-identity or a senior questioning his life's meaning. The issues I am best suited to addressing are both the dark sides of the human condition-such as depression, anxiety, anger, loss, suffering, and death-and the bright sides of personal growth and flourishing.

Anyone of us can struggle with our mental health. It can be difficult having to deal with your struggles on your own. Speaking to a therapist about Anxiety, Depression, couples issues and even family issues can be a helpful tool in your own healing journey. Many of us have felt like we were unable to talk to someone out of fear of judgement from others. You may have even told someone about what you were going through and your experiences have been minimized or ignored. Therapy is a safe place you can talk about your struggles without fear of judgement.

Oftentimes, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness can emerge in our lives and make us feel stuck. In addition, experiences with trauma can make us feel like we are not deserving of support. You deserve mental health support that seeks to understand your unique experiences, needs and goals. Depression, anxiety and experiences with trauma can be debilitating mental health concerns that impact our well-being, relationships and daily living. These moments can be tough to navigate without someone to trust and confide in for support.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
