My ideal client is someone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves or others. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship difficulties, or a lingering sense that something isn’t quite right — even if they can’t fully put it into words. Often, they are thoughtful, self-aware individuals who have tried to “push through” on their own but are now realizing they don’t want to carry everything alone anymore. What they need most is not to be fixed, judged, or rushed, but to be understood. They want a space where they can slow down, reflect, and make sense of their inner world without blame

It may have taken a while to get here, but you’re finally ready to seek support. Perhaps you’ve been caught in a cycle of constant stress followed by periods of burnout or collapse. You may have noticed anger outbursts, emotional distance, or habits that once provided relief are no longer enough. This may have even taken a toll on your closest relationships. You’ve accomplished a great deal, but it has come at a high cost and you may be feeling it now. Therapy can offer a way to make sense of this with care and perspective.

Many neurodivergent, ADHD, autistic, gifted, or 2e adults live in the tension between who they are and who they learned they had to be. You may find yourself monitoring every interaction, carrying old criticisms, or pushing yourself past exhaustion. This inner push-pull can leave you feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to show up as your real self, especially when it feels like everyone else was truly handed instructions you never received. At Becoming Yourself Counselling, I offer a safe, grounded space to explore these inner conflicts, understand your patterns, and gently move toward a more authentic way of being

Stressed out?  Frazzled? Frustrated? Not sure what to change or which way to turn? Not sure who to trust? We've all been there. Now and then we all feel the need to slow it all down and see things more clearly, in confidence, with gentleness and wisdom. You want someone to come alongside you, who puts you first, who understands that trauma doesn't have to be some spectacular event to have a real and lasting impact.

Hi, I’m Joe. I’m a registered social worker and psychotherapist with over combined fifteen years of experience supporting teens, young adults, and adults in schools, community mental health, and treatment settings. Many of my current clients seek reflection, validation, genuine connection and thoughtful observations to better understand their narrative and stay connected to themselves rather than overwhelmed by dysregulation. Therapy with me is about growing your capacity to feel, to choose, and to respond in ways aligned with who you want to be rather than letting old patterns make decisions for you.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
