Here's the good news: OCD recovery is possible! As a clinician trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (Ex/RP) therapy (the gold-standard treatment for OCD ), I will collaborate with you and your family to support you.
Perhaps it started with one or two jarring and disturbing thoughts or images or an unshakable feeling that something wasn't right. Desperate to get rid of this unsettling experience, you performed a behaviour or mental act that you just felt compelled to complete, and at first, it seemed to help. Now you are caught in a vicious cycle where you feel the overwhelming urge to engage in certain thoughts or behaviours over and over in search of relief. You're stuck, and you desperately want to get out. If you can relate, you are not alone. Obsessive -compulsive disorder is an experience that affects 1-2% of the population.

With her Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto and over 16 years of counselling experience, Kim's therapy approach is encouraging, motivating and practical. Utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) she provides practical techniques to address anxious and depressive moods. She believes that self-talk and lifestyle routines play a key role in successfully managing emotions. When we adapt a more positive, balanced perspective, our feelings and behaviours follow. Past hurts and traumas can be used as a powerful ally to produce a newfound freedom. By walking through our pain we can find new restored purpose and JOY!

One of my specialties is in Maternal Mental Health. Having personally experienced a traumatic birth, it is my passion to support other parents and families who are facing difficulties or trauma related to pre or post-partum experiences. Parenthood can often feel lonely and isolating, but with the right coping strategies and supports, it can also be rewarding and exciting. Additional special interests of mine include supporting those who identify with anxiety, the aging population and/or life transitions, work place issues, and parenting struggles.

Whether you are new to therapy or looking for a fresh perspective, I work with people who feel overwhelmed and stuck. Stuck in their grief, fears, or memories—stuck in a job or a relationship that no longer satisfies—stuck with intense emotions that can hijack the mind and derail daily life. What can help is someone to explore how old MOs may be in need of an update. Nothing you have been through needs to limit where you go from here.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
