First Responders: are you feeling fatigued beyond usual, or perhaps you are struggling with memory or irritable mood? Is it getting harder for you to get motivated to show up? Are you startled by noises and flashes. How is your level of hypervigilance, extra alert to a fault? First responders are at a much higher risk of experiencing symptoms of PTSD and with that usually comes along depression and fractured relationships. PTSD is a silent dis-order. It can ruin lives, families and test everyone's tolerance.

Being honest and vulnerable with someone you’ve just met can be scary and overwhelming. I offer a safe and open experience where I am committed to understanding your goals and supporting you on your path to wellness and wholeness. My understanding of the importance of receiving support began with my own personal experiences caring for family members. These experiences highlighted the importance of listening, the value of empathy, and the need to be treated with dignity and respect. I will remind you that you are not broken, give you room to access your wisdom, support you in identifying how you feel, and planning your next steps.

Working with neuro-diverse children and adolescents over the years has given me knowledge and insight into their unique experiences. Helping them with sensory processing, peer relationships, behavioural difficulties, and emotional regulation are the many areas that I have experience. Children and adolescents are trying to find their way in life, with support and therapy I can guide them in that journey.

There are times when everyone struggles to find ways to balance their own needs vs. all of life's competing demands. When this balance becomes uneven due to additional stressors in our relationships, school or work lives, we often forget to prioritize our emotional health. This can lead to chronic stress and problematic behaviours that impact functioning. I believe that the adolescent brain is inherently resilient, and I also know that there are times when these stressors can have a profound impact on one's overall wellness. Psychotherapy can give adolescents the chance to explore the root cause of these stressors.

If you feel anxious, stressed, overwhelmed and feel that no one around you seems to understand, you are not alone. It can be very challenging to navigate day to day life while trying to make sense of this anxiety and stress. Many changes including breaking up, divorce, job loss, death of a loved one can lead to feeling lost or stuck. Trying to balance two cultures where on one side is your family's expectations and on the other side is western world's norms around dating, relationships and work can cause confusion around identity and self worth.

Life can be really challenging. Family dynamics and difficult personalities can make you feel like you’re reliving painful moments from the past. Being a parent, or trying to become one, can bring heartache and frustration. Infertility, loss, illness and anxiety can make life feel heavy, difficult, and rid you of vitality. This is where I come in to help. I can take you to better places. Healing doesn’t mean the pain never existed; it means the pain no longer controls our lives. I will create a space where you will feel safe and unconditionally supported to explore your thoughts, feelings, and worries, without judgement.

Accepting new clients - are you struggling with relationships, communication, self regulation, identity, anxiety, low mood, or stress? I am here to support you. I work with individuals and couples to gain tools, resources, and a space to reflect and process. Wherever you may find yourself in the journey of wanting more, I'd love to bear the heaviness with you, wade into the overwhelm, and try to make sense of all the murkiness around you to see the hope. It's still there, it's just a little too hidden right now.

Are you incredibly hard on yourself? Does every day feel like an uphill battle? As a woman, low self esteem can impact all areas of your life. If you are struggling to find the positives, you are not alone. Low self esteem can make you feel scared of failing, feel anxious, or uncomfortable when out in public, cause you to isolate, or make you feel like there is something wrong with you. Feelings of insecurity, self-doubt, and overwhelm are very common, especially in this post-pandemic era and it can make your days more difficult to get through. I help women who are struggling with how they feel about themselves to feel better.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
