I’m a registered social worker and highly skilled psychotherapist for over 15 years of clinical experience working with children, youth, and adults who are mainly survivors of
sexual abuse
. Sexual trauma can create long lasting emotional and psychological issues ranging from PTSD, relationship problems, trust issues, feelings of shame and guilt, eating disorders, anxiety issues, depression, addiction, self-harming or suicidal thoughts. It takes a lot of courage for someone to be ready for therapy in hopes for a chance to finally move on and not let the past continue to hold you back anymore.

Luminita is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She believes that our past shapes the person we are today. Our traumatic experiences have shaped the way we think, act, and interact with people close to us. However, with the proper guidance and support, we can improve, heal, and learn to love life and cherish moments of happiness! She has provided therapy and assessment in public and private practice for several years. Luminita also has extensive experience in psychological assessments used in legal contexts and has provided expert testimony in court proceedings.

Issues I have worked with extensively are substance dependence, intimate partner power and control issues, PTSD, adult and childhood
sexual abuse
, attachment trauma, Dissociative Identity Disorder, voluntary and involuntary sex work and human trafficking, conflict with the justice systems, and "honour based" violence and forced marriage.
Aspire Therapy is the private practice of Registered Psychotherapist Deborah Callander in Mississauga. ASPIRE is an acronym for A Supportive Partner in Recovery, which I believe describes my approach well. I draw primarily on Internal Family Systems therapy to explore the sources and development of the suffering in your life, critical to healing. Coping with pain by self medicating eventually does more harm than good. If you've tried to make changes but life has become unsustainable I can help. Let's discuss the options available to you for recovery.

I have extensive experience supporting individuals experiencing marginalization and trauma associated with the following: PTSD, anxiety, stress management, burnout, self-criticism, sexual
assault
, intimate partner violence, historical violence, and intergenerational trauma as a result of colonial legacies and assimilation policies.
My primary aim is to provide a non-judgmental, confidential, and supportive environment that promotes self-awareness, honours strengths and resilience, allowing individuals to openly talk about their concerns and feelings. Utilizing principles of self-compassion, mindfulness, and cognitive strategies, I provide a safe space for individuals to express and understand their feelings and develop new strategies for managing difficult challenges, changes, and transitions. Together, we work on developing a therapeutic relationship, creating a dialogue, and work to overcome problematic thoughts, feelings or behaviours.

Currently accepting new clients for virtual sessions, daytime availability! Trauma, stress and anxiety are definitely no fun - they can wreak havoc on our minds and bodies. These are all things that live in the body and can dysregulate our nervous systems. They can show up as spiraling thoughts that are difficult to turn off, seemingly random emotional outbursts and uncomfortable physical symptoms such as fatigue, restlessness, tension, chronic pain or digestive issues. Maybe you’ve tried avoiding the stressors, shutting down your thoughts, venting to a friend or just pushing through, but none of this really seems to be helping.

Life certainly has many stressors these days. You may be considering therapy to help make sense of how you are feeling. Crushing feelings of overwhelm can seem hopeless and isolating. Change is scary, feels hard, especially if you feel like you are doing it alone. By remaining curious and building self-awareness, we can start to identify your stuck points, and together build skills and strategies to empower you to regain your sense of self. My approach is to work collaboratively with you, to understand what you are looking for, and for you to see your world a little clearer.

We all experience pain and blockages that get our attention and tell us that something is wrong. Seeking counselling is a natural, healthy way to take action and heal ourselves. Sometime life's challenges can be an opportunity to grow and get to know ourselves better. I work with individuals, couples and families. I enjoy working with adolescents and see all ages in my practice.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
