Life can be challenging. When something throws us for a loop, our usual coping strategies may not be enough and we may find ourselves feeling lost, afraid or unsure of what to do and how to manage. If you are experiencing a crisis or major life transition such as job loss, diagnosis of illness or a chronic health condition, marital or relationship crises (i.e.,
infidelity
, abuse, separation), psychotherapy and clinical counselling can help you regain your bearings and cultivate novel coping strategies to get you back on your feet.

I help couples overcome conflict to create strong and harmonious relationships. Using The Gottman Method or CBT, couples can learn stop being at war with each other. What were once heart-breaking conversations the couple did not know how to fix, turn into dialogue around making the relationship better, repairing old hurts, and deepening emotional connection. Whether the conflict stems from poor communication and emotional distance, to trauma,
affairs
, infertility, or substance use problems, the evidence based treatments can help couples communicate openly and find solutions, or decide it is time to move on.

We all experience challenges and yet through insight, compassion and action we are able to grow and transform. I aim to walk alongside clients to build coping and resiliency while exploring sources of distress to confidently confront life’s struggles. I have worked with individuals wanting to heal from a traumatic past or finding their path, and couples feeling stuck in dysfunction or wanting to heal from
infidelity
. Clients’ marginalized identities, and the complexities this may add, is integrated in a culturally sensitive way-should clients wish to explore and incorporate this into counselling.

Disconnected. Broken. Hopeless. Powerless. Stuck. Many men I work with tell me this is how they feel. You may be struggling with anxiety, anger, depression, shame, guilt, grief, sadness, or disconnect - and struggle with an addiction (sex/porn/alcohol/marijuana/video games/gambling/fantasy) or underlying thoughts, beliefs, and feelings you have held since childhood. Relationships with those you care about, including the one with yourself, may have been impacted by your behaviours. You are not alone, and my goal is to work with you on ways to move past this problematic behaviour and develop better coping skills and resources.

You are "whole," not broken, though you may feel otherwise. You are an agent of change, and have the power to make a difference, in your own life and others. You know yourself best, and have resources within you that can be brought forth. You are perfectly imperfect. Early life experiences have shaped us, giving us resources and coping strategies to survive. Sometimes we find that later in life, these strategies no longer work for us, and we may need assistance to find different alternatives. As we become aware of ourselves, we can also become aware of where we can make changes.

***NOW ACCEPTING CLIENTS FOR PHONE/VIDEO*** When our thoughts get the better of us and we feel overwhelmed, I believe there is always hope to reach the peace for which we all yearn. In my thirty eight years of providing social work and psychotherapy services, I have learned that people seek counselling when they find themselves in difficult and painful situations. To makes matters more complex, the coping skills that they have learned to date are not providing relief or resolution. To put it simply - my clients want help in becoming “unstuck”. Counselling provides an opportunity to be understood and to learn new ways of perceiving and solving problems. My clients are able to expand their capacity to cope with multiple stressors and conflicts and are able to create a new vision of themselves and their future.

How does therapy for infidelity work?
A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.
How long does therapy for infidelity take?
Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.
How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?
When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.
How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?
Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
