Sometimes we don't realize the weight of something we've been carrying until we feel the weight of its release, but reaching out for assistance requires courage, and can be anxiety provoking. The key is to identify a therapist whom you feel a connection with, and have confidence that they possess the skills required to facilitate desired change. Clients are supported in identifying and increasing their awareness of repetitive and interfering patterns, and exploring routes for change, healing and growth. My intention is to facilitate clients in transforming the emotional impact of life's various challenges and stressors.

I also pull a lot from lived experience – especially, when working with my clients who are struggling with
grief
, cancer diagnosis, and supporting loved ones through difficult transitions.
Welcome! Let me start out by telling you what I tell all my potential clients: Therapy is such an individual process and so much of it has to do with finding the right therapist. Many of us have similar training and areas of expertise but we all differ in personality. I want to use this space here to give you an idea of my vibe and approach. I’m a little quirky with a gentle approach and strong ability to challenge you and explore with you. I can sit with you in heavy spaces, difficult feelings, and complex thoughts.

While talk therapy is proven to be an extremely effective tool for many, I also believe in the healing benefits of music and the arts when we're at a
loss
of words.
Practising holistically from a humanistic approach, we will work collaboratively to support real and lasting change. We will do this through making essential meaning of your past and present life, exploring outdated thoughts, beliefs and behaviours, discovering adverse patterns of relating, and developing self-awareness. Whether you're struggling with personal difficulties, complex issues or a clinical diagnosis, I offer individuals, couples and families a safe and confidential space to be heard, seen and understood in order to effectively process and heal.

I am experienced in working with
grief
,
loss
, interpersonal issues, emotional dysregulation, and trauma-informed work using Internal Family Systems, CBT, ACT and DBT and more.
Growing up in a household where mental health did not exist and was heavily stigmatized, I always felt different from my family members when it came to expressing emotions, being vulnerable and highly attuned to others, and ultimately felt like a fish out of water – an outsider that was “too sensitive”. Now, embracing and loving this part of me, I use those “weaknesses” as my strengths. I have felt my own growth and personal discovery through my work and know that growth can happen at any time, anywhere, even in the direst of situations. I come along with you on your journey as you learn to embrace who you are and create new paths.

bereavement
, pregnancy and infant
loss

Hi! I’m Denise, and my approach to counselling comes from a place of compassion and life experience. I know how difficult it is to open up to others, but sometimes, we just can’t navigate the hard parts of life alone, and I would be honoured to work with you through your most challenging times. For example, experiencing a
death
or
loss
, separation, and divorce can be gut-wrenching, I know because I've been there. Embarking on an assisted reproduction journey, including IVF, can be a long and winding road. No matter what you are going through, together, we will get you through the ups and downs and everything in between.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
