The main therapy method I work with is Gestalt - which can be quite creative.
COVID-19 Update *I continue to see clients via secure online video and phone sessions.* My practice includes a range of people and issues and I enjoy that diversity. You bring a curiosity about yourself and a desire for something different in your life. A common denominator is your need to be seen and heard for who you are. I am honoured to be an insightful guide to my clients as they discover and express themselves more authentically.

Gestalt Therapy can help you see how your ability to fully live your life gets interrupted.
“Is this forever?” You might be asking yourself this question when you’re struggling and feeling overwhelmed, especially if you’re recovering from abuse, trauma, or illness. Sometimes we lose track of what we want and need moment-to-moment, believing we need permission to want and need anything at all. It is this sense of being “stuck” that often brings clients to therapy. Having a witness—and a safe place to be witnessed—can support us in moving through and beyond life’s most challenging moments. With awareness of our patterns, automatic responses, and bodily sensations, we can start to feel our way out of that “forever” feeling.

The anchor of my work is Gestalt therapy.
It may take some courage to reach out for support when not knowing what to do, who to come to, how to deal with. And that can be quite a lonely and painful experience, together with feeling overwhelmed, lost, stuck. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space where you can get a better understanding of your feelings and emotions, see how you are entrenched in your own patterns, process past experiences and just talk about heavy stuff you are dealing with now. This work can bring you closer to a fulfilling and satisfying life of your choosing, where you may be authentically yourself.

When I think about therapy, I imagine my client’s search for well-being and healing as if they were lost and trying to find their way home. You might know where home is, but find yourself stuck in darkness, not being able to find your way. As your therapist, I see myself holding the flashlight. You are the one who knows your way to healing, and I have the tools to help get you there easier. This is what I believe therapy looks like; us walking together on your journey. As we travel together to help you find “home”—your place of healing, peace, and comfort—while I share my knowledge and tools to help you find that “home”.

Your childhood pain does not need to define who you are - today. Hello Community! Welcome to Ignite Counselling Services, we provide therapeutic support to members of the Black community. This is because we understand that within our community, many of us have experienced mistrust and betrayal when asking for help. This is why we tend to shy away from seeking support due to the fear of vulnerability and being judged. When you mask your feelings, you suppress your emotions which causes you to struggle and manage your stress and emotional pain in silence.

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behaviour, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
