I have experience working with persons diagnosed with eating disorders, as well as with those suffering from various medical conditions.
Hello and welcome. I am interested in listening to your story and figuring out together how you can address your difficulties. Perhaps you are experiencing painful emotions and have difficulties figuring them out; perhaps you have a lot on your plate and are overwhelmed by the many demands placed on you; perhaps you find yourself dissatisfied with or worried by relationships in your life; or, maybe you or your loved ones are going through a health crisis and need new skills to manage situations you have never encountered before.

I have a specific interest and advanced training in eating disorders, self harm, anxiety, depression, mood disorders and family concerns.
Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to explore my services! I have had the pleasure of working as a Social Worker/Psychotherapist for 30 plus years, focusing on adolescents and adults. I am passionate about providing a warm, empathic and safe space for my clients. I will approach our sessions with kindness, curiosity and compassion. During a work adventure years ago in England, I quickly learned that youth inspire, energize and fascinate me. It is a privilege to work with youth during a time of intense self-discovery and growth and adults as life bumps arise and we need to explore new ways to enhance the quality of our lives.

I work with a variety of issues including: trauma, anxiety, depression, addictions, eating disorders, relationship challenges, grief and loss, or other life stressors.
Life can sometimes make us feel overwhelmed, anxious or like we’re roaming without any sense of direction. It can be a struggle to gain traction and to figure out what is making us feel the emotions we do or behave the way we do. We can begin to lose sight of who we are and what our purpose is. If you feel "stuck", it can help to find a trusted professional who listens to your story and works with you to untangle the ball of emotions. All too often we focus on the negative things in life without much attention paid to what is going well. Balance in life is key, and once it's restored, positive change can occur.

My areas of specialty include trauma, complex PTSD and eating disorders.
While it is not uncommon to experience distressing emotions, maladaptive thoughts, and difficult life events, we don’t always have the tools or strategies to manage. Inability to cope can make us feel ashamed, alone and overwhelmed. As a therapist, I work with my clients collaboratively to build a trusting therapeutic relationship so that individuals feel supported throughout the course of therapy. I will always provide a non-judgmental and welcoming space so that you can be the most authentic version of yourself while feeling safe enough to do so.

Healing involves moving beyond distraction and avoidance, which perpetuates symptoms like eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. It involves welcoming your experiences, including the painful parts, without being overwhelmed by them. This is a skill that is developed through inner work practices such as quieting the mind, connecting to your center, listening to your intuition, letting go of control, and trusting in something greater than your mind. When you get off-track from these inherent abilities, you get signs....your symptoms are like red flags, encouraging you to come back to who you are on the deepest level.

I enjoy working with adolescents and see all ages in my practice.

Eating Disorders Counsellors

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
