Whether you are struggling with addiction, stress, chronic pain , or depression, I can help. Although these four issues may seem separate, there is a lot of overlap and chances are that if you are experiencing one of these issues, you are experiencing at least two others, where they feed off each other. My holistic approach takes into account your life as a whole. I believe in long-term recovery, so I aim to treat and heal root causes rather than symptoms alone. I also help to create sustainable and supportive structures in your life that you can lean on during hard times.

My clients face a wide range of issues including: Depression, anxiety, chronic pain , Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), life transitions, career transitions, relationship challenges and parenting issues. When I first start working with clients, we develop a list of goals that they would like to work towards so that our work is focused and directed. Some examples of goals my clients have worked towards and achieved include: acquiring tools to feel more in control of their depression and/or anxiety, becoming more assertive with others, improving their relationships and feeling more fulfilled with their career.

Life can be challenging. When something throws us for a loop, our usual coping strategies may not be enough and we may find ourselves feeling lost, afraid or unsure of what to do and how to manage. If you are experiencing a crisis or major life transition such as job loss, diagnosis of illness or a chronic health condition, marital or relationship crises (i.e., infidelity, abuse, separation), psychotherapy and clinical counselling can help you regain your bearings and cultivate novel coping strategies to get you back on your feet.

Change, loss, pain is part of life.
"People are doing the best they can". Absolutely. And, given life experience, skills, supports & lack thereof. Yet, despite our best efforts, situations past or current, perceptions, emotions, ways of coping can be more than what we can effectively navigate alone. We hit ruts. Life isn't what we want it to be. Therapy can help us to understand the issues & actively work toward desired changes. To create "a life worth living", of your own design. Authentically you. If you want positive change, if you're ready to work diligently toward change, if you're ready to "get down & dirty", in partnership, let's talk!

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
