Deciding to make a change requires lots of courage. It requires even more courage and effort to take the first steps towards it. And the fact that you are here reading these lines means that you have already started your journey and I can assist you with the rest. I have several years experience of working in the mental health area and a vast theoretical knowledge of multiple modalities in therapy. In addition to my private practice I also work in the Family Services York Region (FSYR) as a psychotherapist where I work with individuals (including adults, youths, and children), couples, and families and run various groups.

When should I seek psychotherapy? Answers vary among each person. You do not have to feel sick to seek psychotherapy. If you are struggling with relationships, feel that you could use help to achieve your goals, or feel stuck in an emotion such as anxiety or depression, you may benefit from seeing a therapist. I am excited to be an ally on your journey of self-exploration and personal growth. I am a psychotherapist in Hopewoods Psychotherapy, we aim to provide professional mental health services for the Chinese community in Toronto.

Connecting with Self is a journey of coming home. Self criticism and self-pressuring (which are symptoms of trauma) may get in the way of that journey. Trauma can't be fixed but can be heard, held and contained, so healing can begin. When we can recognize the symptom of trauma in oursleves and others, we begin to see the real person underneath. Trauma not only affects our mood, but also our body. To renegotiate trauma, you can work with someone who not only professionally understands the healing process, but who also walked through the path themselves.

“When you create a difference in someone’s life, you not only impact their life, you impact everyone influenced by them throughout their entire lifetime. No act is ever too small. One by one, that is how to make an ocean rise.’’ - Danielle Doby. I believe that your mental health is the vehicle by which you navigate life successfully; and, as a Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist, with a Master of Social Work, I have over 10 years of experience working with individuals and families, experiencing mental health issues as a result of current crises or cycles of unresolved generational trauma.

Are you feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed? Do you constantly compare yourself to individuals around you, wondering if something is wrong with you? Are you trying your best just to keep up with everyday life? Do your friends and family try to listen and support you, but their responses seem to reinforce thoughts such as "they think I'm not trying hard enough" or "no one understands what I'm going through"? Are you looking for someone who can understand what you're going through, recognize that you're trying your best, and perhaps even help you reduce some of the weight you have been carrying?

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
