“When you create a difference in someone’s life, you not only impact their life, you impact everyone influenced by them throughout their entire lifetime. No act is ever too small. One by one, that is how to make an ocean rise.’’ - Danielle Doby. I believe that your mental health is the vehicle by which you navigate life successfully; and, as a Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist, with a Master of Social Work, I have over 10 years of experience working with individuals and families, experiencing mental health issues as a result of current crises or cycles of unresolved generational trauma.

Children of immigrants have the unique experience of being brought up in a different country than their parents. Due to the cultural contrasts, you may have different values from your
family
as well. Confusion, guilt, and anger are just a few feelings that children of immigrants go through, while trying to balance their inner and outer worlds. Your complex feelings and experiences may create issues related to anxiety, depression, or stress which can be difficult to navigate on your own. However, with therapy you do not have to take on these challenges alone.

Sleepless? Irritable? Constantly tired? If you've been struggling with poor sleep for more than a month, it's time to get it checked out. Poor sleep contributes to all sorts of daytime challenges, including increased stress at work and in your relationships. Or... is it chronic stress from work/school/
family
that's contributing to sleep problems? You might be on autopilot so much that it's hard to evaluate and problem solve. You resort to old reaction habits that aren't really effective anymore.

Sometimes all we want is to be heard, to have someone fully present for us. We experience this from
family
and friends but there is always an underlying judgement or opinion that direct us where we may not want to go. A lot of times talking to a stranger sounds like an intrusive or uncomfortable situation to be in, but I can assure you once you get past the first fearful step, you will learn that it's a form of self care that will stay with you for a lifetime.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
