Are you looking for that instruction manual to help you navigate difficult issues? Whether you are a parent looking for instructions to help your child, a teen trying to figure out yourself and relationships or an adult trying to figure out life – each one of you may need an instruction booklet to help you out.
I have training in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, suicidal ideation and self-harm, parent/child conflict, trouble at school, ADHD, parenting and general coping with stress at home and at work. My work is grounded on the principles of attachment, trauma and neurobiology. My approach is a balance of acceptance and change; ensuring to be client-centred while being firm and challenging at the same time. Each client is an individual and I will work with you to tailor a treatment program that meets your needs. Ultimately my goal is to work myself out of a job, meaning your goals have been met and you don’t need me anymore.

When you are looking at this profile, you are probably concerned about yourself to the point that you want to seek help. You may be experiencing intense emotions/strong feelings, like fear, anger, sadness, loneliness or helplessness, and it has been impacting on your life, such as your relationship, work, sleep... Hi! I am so glad that you are here. The decision to begin therapy is often the first step towards positive change, improved relationships and feeling better. Are you moving into new roles and responsibilities and finding it difficult to cope? Have you been impacted by something painful and feel you need a place to process this? Do you have a child or teen with anxiety, ADHD, anger, or OCD and want to arm them with skills to crush these issues? Could you use an expert opinion on what you’re going through, or a non-judgemental ear just to listen? If you answered yes to any of the above, therapy together may be a wonderful fit for you!

I use a number of programs, tools and interventions that are specific to the needs of the children, adolescent and the families I have worked with.
As parents, we always want to do what we can to help our kids when they are struggling but sometimes we need to ask for expert help. I have great success helping children who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety. Through their sessions with me they are able to understand their symptoms and how to cope and this learning supports them throughout their life. I use evidenced based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) programs . These programs are also successful with youth and teens. I am committed to parent involvement as much as possible throughout the process because I know about how important your support it to their success.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
