Even though your life looks good from the outside, something just doesn’t feel right. No matter how much you accomplish, you continue to feel guilty, small and like you’re not enough. When you think about it, you probably don't even know who "you" are or what you enjoy anymore. Maybe you never really did know. It may feel as though stress has taken over your life. Work is no longer fulfilling, your home life & relationships are suffering and you feel defeated at the end of the day. All of this leaves you feeling overwhelmed, down and confused, and you're not sure how to move forward.

Stories have always intrigued me because they helped me to understand how other people think and see the world. My interest in stories led me to social work: as I worked in the community, I learned the power of personal narratives to limit or expand the opportunities that my clients chose to pursue. I am particularly passionate about working with people experiencing life transitions. Transition periods can come at all stages of life. They can include a new diagnosis, the loss of employment, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the start of a new career, recovery after illness, or a faith crisis.

You are struggling to adjust to parenthood, you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and unsure. Maybe you have experienced a loss or fertility struggles, causing you to feel like giving up hope. You may find yourself quick to anger and lash out in ways you never imagined. Or perhaps your relationship is changing and you and your partner are no longer on the same page. You might feel overwhelmed with the mental load of parenting. Or experiencing stress and anxiety transitioning back to work after leave. Whether you are pregnant, postpartum or an experienced parent, it can be difficult to manage the never ending demands and conflicts.

Life is truly filled with so many layers (just like an onion!) which can make it hard to know where to start when it comes to counselling. Hi, I'm Julie (she/her) and I deeply believe in the beauty of connection. Currently, I'm completing my Master of Psychotherapy at Wilfrid Laurier University. My own journey with mental health and being neurodivergent has truly inspired my passion for this field. I work with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, chronic pain, ADHD/ASD, self-esteem, and couples counselling. I am also deeply passionate about working with 2slgbtqia+ individuals and the queer community.

I am a Fat & Proud therapist challenging Psychology Today on weight loss option being completly unacceptable. Data shows around 97% of diets fail long term. There are NO experts on weight loss simply because "diets dont work" - but it does make money for lots of people, which multiple systems of opression benifit from. Weight loss fails because our bodies know our size. When you are ready to get off the roller coaster of self woth being connected to size, ability etc. please reach out. I work from a body liberation, feminist theory, anti-diet, fat acceptance and Intuitive eating framework. I work in parts work, nature & compassion.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
