I am sex, sex work,
kink
, poly positive and affirming.
I have a special interest in relationships; understanding how we come to relate with ourselves and one another, and the ways this connects with our unique world-views, beliefs, and life’s meaning. Together we will co-create our therapeutic relationship, valuing authenticity and creativity. And in the therapy room we might explore grief and bereavement, life transitions, queerness, anxiety, depression, and understanding emotions and identity. My style starts with a trauma-informed approach, and I draw on techniques from narrative therapy, internal family systems, emotion-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy.

I’m
kink
knowledgeable, studying sex therapy, and the chances are, I’m fully qualified to meet you where you are.
I am a white, cis-female, queer, creative woman, and I go by Heidi! Art therapy is a great way to hack the therapeutic process. Trying to work through something tough, but you can’t talk about it — or you don’t want to? Art Therapy gives you a way to express yourself that doesn’t require you to, or to be “good at art”! Art gives your brain a way to get things out that our conscious mind doesn’t want to think about. So much of our relationship conflict comes from what’s not being said. What are you not saying? To whom? What’s stopping you? Let’s find out.

Have you been struggling with anxiety or depression? Feeling stuck? Maybe you had a traumatic experience and you know it still affects you but you don't know how. Often times, we can't simply talk our way out of trauma, depression or anxiety. It can impact the relationship between our body and mind and can even manifest as chronic pain, digestive issues, poor self-esteem and relationship difficulties. Art therapy can offer a container to explore difficult experiences and emotions, to hold things that may be difficult to put into words. It can provide effective coping strategies and help you build a healthy relationship with self.

Jan 30, 2023 - started wait list. I understand that you might be nervous to reach out to a therapist, especially if you’ve had trouble with other services in the past. I have experience supporting LGBQ, Trans, and Nonbinary adults and youth and their family members, members of the LGBTQ community who have struggled with navigating identity and spirituality, and anyone who struggles with constant negative self-talk. If you have some goals in mind to work toward, feel free to reach out. I can offer a consultation and give you some time to decide whether you feel we would be a good fit to work together.

I've worked therapeutically with diverse populations, in correctional and community settings, with families, adolescents and adults, for about 20 years. My approach is nuanced and responsive; my lens is anti-oppressive, attachment and trauma informed, queer and trans affirming, and psycho-dynamically and somatically attuned. To me, this means listening to, and noticing with you, communication from various verbal and non-verbal levels. It also means witnessing and acknowledging cultural, systemic, and familial legacies of power and oppression and their impact on our internal and external lives.

Imagine you have a cup that is full to the brim. You walk through life making sure the cup never spills, and you are so focused on keeping the cup steady that you don’t notice things going on around you. You don't react in big ways because it will tip the cup over. Suddenly, one final drop makes the whole cup overflow. You wonder - "What's wrong with me? I have been managing to hold on to this cup all this time and now everything is everywhere and outside of my control." Now, if the cup was actually half empty, one extra drop wouldn't make a big difference. Are you ready to start emptying your cup?

Finding the right therapist is a process, and I appreciate that this process can feel overwhelming. I applaud you for taking the first step. I honour the diversity of all relationships and I am passionate about supporting my clients in identifying and utilizing their inner and outer resources.

Sex-Positive, Kink Allied Counsellors
Why might an individual want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?
A sex-positive or kinky individual may want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist because the client may feel safer and more supported discussing their experiences and challenges. A therapist who identifies as kink-friendly will have experience with clients having diverse sexual preferences and will likely be nonjudgmental and supportive about issues brought to the table. It is important to note that sex-positive, kink-allied individuals may find equal success with therapists who do not have such specialised knowledge and background. The most important factor in the success of therapy is for the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond.
Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in sex-positive, kink-allied treatment?
Generally, no. There are limited training programs and unofficial accreditations that therapists can pursue, but a therapist’s expertise will ultimately come from their previous experience with similar clients, their engagement with organisations that promote sex positivity or kink-allied lifestyles, and the importance they place on safety and cultural sensitivity.
How can individuals recognise a good sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?
An experienced therapist is able to help clients explore their sexual identity and expression and relieve any discomfort or stigma attached to discussing such matters and the client’s overall challenges. A therapist who is sex-positive and kink-allied is able to create an environment that honors a client’s experience and sexual preferences. To recognise a good therapist, clients can simply ask directly about topics and issues important to them and gauge their comfort level and connection with a clinician based on the responses.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist with a focus on sex positivity and alternative sexual lifestyles?
Some individuals may feel most comfortable knowing that the clinician they’re working with has a commitment to creating an atmosphere of sex positivity and has experience with relationship diversity and alternative relationship structures. Working with a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist may help clients respect their own challenges and improve identity-affirming treatment.
