*Offering virtual trauma therapy throughout Ontario.* While I believe that everyone carries within themselves the capacity to heal, during difficult periods in life our personal strengths can be impossible to access. At these times, we may need a caring and non-judgmental therapist to assist us. My intention is to provide you with a safe space to share your concerns and to help you to fulfill the hopes you have for your life. As each individual is unique, so is therapy. I adapt my approach to meet your personal goals and together we will come to identify the process that best serves you.

I use EMDR, Internal
Family Systems
, DBT, CBT, and emotion-focused therapies.
I believe that every person has the innate ability to cope with the challenges in their lives, but sometimes experiences from the past make it difficult to tap into these abilities. I help folks who have experienced trauma or other overwhelming life stressors discover their inner strength and resiliency. When you are feeling stuck or disconnected from the life you want to lead, I hope to bring my warm presence, empathy, and genuine curiosity to help close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

As a mother of four and a therapist trained in
family systems
and attachment theory, I believe in taking a client-centered approach using evidence-based interventions.
As a parent, do you often ask yourself how you could do things differently, feeling guilty or ashamed about the way you manage family situations? Struggling with cycles of negative emotion can leave you feeling alone, anxious, and depressed. Perhaps you feel disconnected from yourself, your partner, and/or your children, and you wish your family dynamic could come together more easily. Practicing acceptance and establishing emotional safety may seem like impossible feats, but know that there is a way.

The past throws stones to the present, and that is what brings many people to therapy. I believe we all have the capacity to heal, but often our own story can get in the way of that healing. If this is your first time seeking out a therapist or if you've done this before, it is my hope to work alongside you, at your pace, as collaborate to make a plan that addresses your needs. With this, it is important for you to choose a therapist who is a good fit and connects to your needs. I encourage you to explore my website and reach out to me to determine if I am that fit for you.

My work with clients is a mix of internal
family systems
, narrative, strengths-based, compassion-focused, systemic, solution-focused, and somatic therapy.
Stories have always intrigued me because they helped me to understand how other people think and see the world. My interest in stories led me to social work: as I worked in the community, I learned the power of personal narratives to limit or expand the opportunities that my clients chose to pursue. I am particularly passionate about working with people experiencing life transitions. Transition periods can come at all stages of life. They can include a new diagnosis, the loss of employment, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the start of a new career, recovery after illness, or a faith crisis.

Yet, I also draw on CBT, DBT, solutions-focused, and internal
family systems
therapies, among others.
[Note: RSW, Inactive/On Leave] Life can be challenging, and although we all have the inner resources to overcome these hardships, we may benefit from some extra support to move us towards mental wellness and our ideal self. As a therapist, I offer individual and group therapy to youth (ages 12-30) who present with concerns related but not limited to anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, relationships, and school/work. Together, we will co-create goals and a therapeutic plan by exploring factors that may contribute to the issue(s) at hand but also personal strengths that can be leveraged within recovery.

I believe that every person has the innate ability to live and harness an authentically bold and heart-centred life. Trauma and oppression disconnects us from this truth leaving behind lasting wounds that hurt our relationship to ourselves and others. I have worked with mental health, addiction and trauma for 20 years and have supported many individuals through their healing journey. I am trained in various integrative and relational therapies that address mind, body and spirit. I hold space and co-create safety so that you may listen and trust the wisdom within that empowers you towards more choice, freedom and boundless joy.

I have a special interest in relationships; understanding how we come to relate with ourselves and one another, and the ways this connects with our unique world-views, beliefs, and life’s meaning. Together we will co-create our therapeutic relationship, valuing authenticity and creativity. And in the therapy room we might explore grief and bereavement, life transitions, queerness, anxiety, depression, and understanding emotions and identity. My style starts with a trauma-informed approach, and I draw on techniques from narrative therapy, internal
family systems
, and mindfulness-based therapy.

perspectives.
My goal is to be accountable to you for the change you want. Psychotherapy should move you forward. We'll discuss your goals, how you would know if you were improving and what prevents you from living the life you want. I support couples, families, and individuals who are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and other challenges.

I facilitate this by drawing primarily from
IFS
, Attachment-based, and Mindfulness-based therapies.
Living in today’s world as a "big feeler", 2SLGBTQ+ person, ally, non-monogamous person, someone who uses substances, or someone who struggles with relationships, can feel exhausting and overwhelming. It can also feel hard to know who the safe supports are (the ones who won’t judge your experience or push you to embrace normative frameworks). You might be seeking support with trauma, anxiety, anger, inner criticism, people-pleasing, emotional dysregulation, harm reduction, identity issues, or feeling othered. Whatever your experiences are, I am proud of you for doing the brave thing of reaching out for help.

Hi, it's nice to virtually meet you! I am Kristie Brassard (she/her), a registered social worker, psychotherapist and guide. In my virtual office, I offer a space for you to share your concerns, and to work on reaching your goals. Greeting you with authenticity, compassion, non-judgment and from time-to-time a little humour, I can support you as you explore your struggles, strengths, and as you process distressing emotions. I often work with clients who are overwhelmed, feeling unsatisfied with certain aspects of their lives, trying to heal past hurts and/or who are wanting to grow.

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.
How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.
Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.
How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
