Relationships are both wonderful and challenging. There are many times in a relationship when couple's therapy can be a beneficial, meaningful, and insightful experience. Maybe you are starting a long term commitment, you have become parents, or you are dealing with affairs , addictions, grief, or separation/divorce. You might want to attend therapy to preempt issues, because the road has gotten a little bumpy, or as a last ditch effort. I love supporting folks at any stage. We’ll move through what your experience is in the relationship to figure out areas that you want to work on to make your relationship flourish.

We're men who work with men to help deal with things like anger, infidelity , relationship issues and any other issues that men deal with.
Most of us men have been taught that we have to manage things by ourselves. To hide our feelings. Or we don't have feelings. Guess what that leads to? Anger, irritability, relationship issues, work problems, and trouble connecting with our kids, friends, and partners. Maybe drinking too much and checking out, too. Or cheating on our partner, because it's easier than trying to figure out what's going on at home. Maybe you don't even realize how bad things have gotten until your partner tells you that you "can't communicate", you're messing up, and now you have no idea what to do and you're defensive and confused.

If you are searching for a respectful and non-judgmental couples therapist, chances are you've been struggling for a while, just hoping things will get better on their own. My work is focused on couples conflict, relational trauma, and sexuality concerns. Whether the problem is infidelity or another traumatic event, lack of interest in sex, drifting apart in your relationship, or constant bickering and rehashing old arguments, the problems facing you as a couple can be overwhelming. It's natural to feel vulnerable and at the same time yearn for a safe place to talk it out with someone who can help.

Many people have found themselves in the exact place you now find yourself – wondering if they should seek the guidance of a professional counsellor for personal, marital or family problems. Here are some of their uncomfortable self-reflections: “Tensions always hover over my relationship with my partner.” “I want to be a better parent.” “I do not look forward to going to work anymore.” “My partner and I keep getting stuck when we try to talk about our problems.” “I want to enjoy being a parent, but often I do not.” “I want to feel happiness and gratitude for my life and the people in it, but I cannot get there.”

Do you sometimes think to yourself "Gosh, my child's behaviour is out of control!". Do you think "I want to help my child so desperately but somehow it feels like I end up making things worse" ? Maybe you blame yourself and wonder "where did I go wrong?". Maybe other people in your child's life blame you. You know something needs to change but don't know where else to look. You've exhausted all the options you know of- you've spoken to other moms, teachers, maybe other therapists. You worry about your child's happiness and stability if something doesn't change. This is hard stuff! I want you to know, you're in the right place!

I've worked therapeutically with diverse populations, in correctional and community settings, with families, adolescents and adults, for about 20 years. My approach is nuanced and responsive; my lens is anti-oppressive, attachment and trauma informed, queer and trans affirming, and psycho-dynamically and somatically attuned. To me, this means listening to, and noticing with you, communication from various verbal and non-verbal levels. It also means witnessing and acknowledging cultural, systemic, and familial legacies of power and oppression and their impact on our internal and external lives.

Infidelity Counsellors

How does therapy for infidelity work?

A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.

How long does therapy for infidelity take?

Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.

How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?

When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.

How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?

Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
