Grief
is unique for every individual. There are many different losses that individuals experience, but the commonality is that
grief
can be debilitating, lonely and isolating. I accompany clients on their journey of processing multiple forms of
grief
that can include

loss
, traumatic
loss
and/or chronic sorrow. I offer virtual, telephone and in-home sessions; yes, I will travel to those who have mobility concerns or difficulties leaving their residence! However, I am a big believer in listening to your instincts and that when you are open to healing, you will somehow be directed to where you need to be. Hello, my name is Paul and I have been a Registered Social Worker for well over 20 years, having worked in multiple fields, across the age spectrum.

What is a meaningful life? How do I cope with stress,
grief
, or trauma? Are healthy relationships possible? How do I stop living in the past? These difficult questions are central to the lives of many people I work with. Challenging life events or a sense of disconnection from yourself and others can have a profound impact on your life. However, you do not need to face these experiences alone. I specialize in working with adults or teenagers who are facing life transitions, change,
loss
, meaninglessness, relationship issues, low self-esteem, LGBTQ+ concerns, trauma, oppression, and who are feeling lost in their inner life.

Are you feeling weighed down by the pain of
loss
or trauma? Perhaps you’re experiencing the confusion that arises when life doesn’t go as planned. Or the self-doubt that can come from choices you’ve made in the past. Along with sadness, you might feel anger or a sense of shame. As a survivor of religious trauma, I have lived experience in the process of moving from this dark and lonely place to healing and hope. Whether you find yourself questioning the beliefs you grew up with or those of a group you chose to align with, we can gently bring what makes you uncomfortable into the light of day and move towards a brighter future.

No counsellor is the right fit for everyone, I know. In the past decade I have learned that my approach is often a good fit for people who seek healing after trauma (long past and recent events), and I have a special interest in supporting those healing in the wake of traumatic
bereavement
. I also work with individuals who find that their day-to-day routines are simply not working anymore, sometimes because of a
loss
or a change in circumstance and other times because their entire sense of self is in transition. If you are asking "who am I now?" or "how do I live with this?" my services may be a good fit.

*NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS* I work with people who are feeling like they need to make a change or process some things before they can really move forward. That might look like a
loss
, a new stage in life, a shifting world view, or maybe needing someone to bounce ideas off of. These can be isolating experiences but you don't have to go through it alone. We can work together to move from overwhelm to confidence and authenticity.

Counselling can help you to develop a different relationship with the “chatter” in your head that tells you that you ”aren’t good enough” and that keeps you from daring greatly. It can help you to look at the stories in your life that counter your shame—and give them a voice. It can help you to acknowledge and accept
loss
in a compassionate manner as you would want for a friend. It can help you to recognize your relationship with your mental health and how you interact with it. It allows you to sort through your values and support you living in a way that aligns with what you want. Counselling looks to support these and more.

Grief Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
