I work with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, emotional issues, struggling with identity issues or hoping to better their relationships with friends, family and partners.
In a world obsessed with perfectionism life sometimes has a tendency to knock us down. I am here to say we don’t have to be perfect all the time, our imperfections are what makes us who we are. Our imperfections provide us with opportunities for growth and resilience.

In therapy, try new strategies to fine tune how you: relate to your partner, your family , how you parent--how you handle your own parents--and how you care for your mental health.
I believe we all dream to live lives of more and lives of less. More: happiness, peace, joy, health, achieving meaningful goals, and joy in relationships. The opposite is also true, we seek lives with less. Less: stress, illness, negativity, pain, bad relationship habits, trauma, anger, and disconnection. Are you one of millions of 1st generation Canadians trapped between 2 worlds? Is it time to create your own life? Do you experience Anxiety, depression, maternal loss/fertility struggles, growing up "fine but feeling empty", or loveless parenting--all of which can hold you back or instill panic. Small steps can feel overwhelming.

Jan 30, 2023 - started wait list. I understand that you might be nervous to reach out to a therapist, especially if you’ve had trouble with other services in the past. I have experience supporting LGBQ, Trans, and Nonbinary adults and youth and their family members, members of the LGBTQ community who have struggled with navigating identity and spirituality, and anyone who struggles with constant negative self-talk. If you have some goals in mind to work toward, feel free to reach out. I can offer a consultation and give you some time to decide whether you feel we would be a good fit to work together.

Sometimes, despite the love we have for our family , it seems that we struggle to have peace within our relationships at home. In supporting families to make the changes they are seeking, I utilize Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) which focuses on restructuring parent and child interactions. I always look at every situation through the lens of being trauma-informed and understanding the role of attachment.

People often come for therapy as they are hurting or distressed and they have found that they are confused about how to move forward. They can be worried about someone else, are having difficulty with relationships with their spouse, children, or coworkers. Some people prefer to attend therapy on their own, while others wish to include the family member they are concerned about. I see people with depression, anxiety, attention difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse, adjustment issues (separation and divorce).

I primarily work from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR Therapy lens, incorporating mindfulness and somatic therapy as needed.
*Offering virtual trauma therapy throughout Ontario.* While I believe that everyone carries within themselves the capacity to heal, during difficult periods in life our personal strengths can be impossible to access. At these times, we may need a caring and non-judgmental therapist to assist us. My intention is to provide you with a safe space to share your concerns and to help you to fulfill the hopes you have for your life. As each individual is unique, so is therapy. I adapt my approach to meet your personal goals and together we will come to identify the process that best serves you.

Rather than quickly giving advice or being emotionally involved as family and friends are, I could help you carefully examine different options and offer some direction.
Sometimes we need someone to listen us in order to gain insight and understanding, then we can come up with a plan to help manage or address what we are going through - whether it's a difficult life transition, a loss, or stressful life event(s). My approach to counselling is to create a collaborative process to support individuals with their mental health recovery. I work from a strengths-based perspective in order to assist people as they overcome adversity and life challenges.

Do you know the feeling where you just don't know what to do or say? Maybe it is your child grappling with someone bullying them at school. Maybe you and your partner are feeling totally unsure how to be the parents and partners you both want to be. Maybe something tragic and life changing has happened and things are indescribably different - in ways you never wanted. Maybe you are seeing your teen shrink away from life in ways that seem totally out of character. Somehow your own life - your own family , your own children, your own choices - can feel like a mystery.

In my 40 year career as a clinical social worker, I have gained extensive experience in developing, effecting, and managing therapeutic approaches for individuals and families who bear the damage of sexual abuse. I am prepared to offer help for many problem areas but I give special emphasis to male and female adults and youth who have committed, or are at risk of committing, or have been the victim of problematic sexual behaviour, This includes clients with special needs such as intellectual disability. I also support families with safety planning for child protection cases or with family resolution/reintegration.

Grief is unique for every individual. There are many different losses that individuals experience, but the commonality is that grief can be debilitating, lonely and isolating. I accompany clients on their journey of processing multiple forms of grief that can include death loss, pet loss, traumatic loss and/or chronic sorrow. I offer virtual, telephone and in-home sessions; yes, I will travel to those who have mobility concerns or difficulties leaving their residence! I also am available to provide support to clients in a counselling capacity specific to mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, self esteem, family conflict).

Everyone faces problems, sometimes they’re small, and sometimes they’re big. Most of the time we can deal with these problems on our own, with a friend, family member, or co-worker. Sometimes, we just don’t seem to be able to work through these issues on our own and that’s when it makes sense to speak with a professional. I take a generalized approach to helping people deal with their problems with treatment tailored to the specific needs of the individual. Treatment is not a one size fits all and what works for you may not work for another.

As a parent, do you often ask yourself how you could do things differently, feeling guilty or ashamed about the way you manage family situations? Struggling with cycles of negative emotion can leave you feeling alone, anxious, and depressed. Perhaps you feel disconnected from yourself, your partner, and/or your children, and you wish your family dynamic could come together more easily. Practicing acceptance and establishing emotional safety may seem like impossible feats, but know that there is a way.

I provide my clients with a safe, welcoming and judge-free environment to discuss their most personal and intimate life struggles. Im honoured they trust me to help guide them. My focus is on helping people build healthy relationships, because when our connections are authentic we thrive. What’s more, our sense of love and belonging is fundamental to reaching our potential. In my 10 years of private practice, I’ve noticed people generally struggle with effective communication, lack of healthy boundaries, assertiveness and most of us question our intuition. I have experience in individual, couple, and family counselling.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
