Depression Therapists in London, ON
Gladys provides counselling to individuals 18 and older, who may be struggling with a variety of issues, including trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship challenges and self-esteem, to name a few.
Imagine being in a place where you feel safe, supported and accepted, in a way that moves you to tell your story to someone who listens to you fully and really hears what you are saying. Most of us rarely experience this. However, this is the experience Gladys strives to create for each of her clients: a space of understanding, curiosity and hope, one that naturally leads to the uncovering of answers to life's difficulties, to the resolving of the anxieties that surround you.

You may be suffering from depression, anxiety, frustration, sadness, helplessness, or other issues
I observe so many people, young and old alike, who are alone in their internal suffering and do not realize that counselling services are available and that counselling helps. Preventative therapy work can often offset or reduce the impact of a stressful situation before it becomes unmanageable.

The Centre for Psychodynamic Insights is a virtual clinic specializing in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This approach explores the root causes of symptoms by uncovering and understanding underlying emotions through evidence-based treatment. Through collaborative dialogue, we examine unconscious thoughts and emotions shaped from childhood to the present. We work to relieve symptoms by understanding how these patterns affect current experiences, and create targeted strategies for meaningful change long-term.

In my practice, I take an integrative approach in therapy to address issues of anxiety, depression, difficulties managing relationships, emotions, grief and trauma.
Exploring experiences, beliefs and emotions in a supportive therapeutic relationship is often an important focus of therapy. Cognitive-behavioural and emotion-focused therapy approaches for negative thoughts or strong emotions that often occur in anxiety and depression may be important components of therapy depending on an individual's needs.

Do you feel anxious and overwhelmed navigating life transitions or finding balance in your busy schedule? Maybe you're feeling stuck in old patterns or negative self-beliefs that feel out of alignment with the life you want to live. Is this getting in the way of building meaningful connections with others and yourself? Sometimes feelings of shame or guilt around our struggles may keep us from reaching out for support, but often times sharing these experiences in a supportive environment can help us begin to move through them. I believe everyone is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to therapy.

My focus is on helping men and women who are navigating the aftermath of trauma - anxiety, depression, relationship issues - that time simply doesn't heal
You are constantly walking on eggshells. Always on high alert, your highly sensitive brain is always scanning other people's expressions to make sure everything is okay. You over-apologize, over-explain, over-share or disconnect and push your emotions deep down. You feel different - too emotional, too “much”. A sense of loneliness and longing for something you can’t describe looms in the background of everything you do. No matter what you try the feeling that there’s “something wrong with you” just won’t let up. You try to feel better - you have journaled, meditated, tried therapy, medication, breathwork…but nothing helps for long

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
