Stories have always intrigued me because they helped me to understand how other people think and see the world. My interest in stories led me to social work: as I worked in the community, I learned the power of personal narratives to limit or expand the opportunities that my clients chose to pursue. I am particularly passionate about working with people experiencing life transitions. Transition periods can come at all stages of life. They can include a new diagnosis, the loss of employment, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship , the start of a new career, recovery after illness, or a faith crisis.

Most people will face challenges in their lives, whether it's symptoms of a mental health concern (e.g. anxiety/depression) or situational (e.g. work, relationships). These challenges can lead us off track, struggling to cope and we find ourselves feeling unfulfilled or distressed. I work with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, relationship issues, trauma, grief and work/life balance concerns. I aim to tailor my approach to each individual client so they feel able to implement the change they want. This may include a focus on learning skills or building a deeper awareness.

*New clients welcome!* Adulting can be hard and life can feel very dark at times. Navigating relationships, work, parenting, and day-to-day stress is enough in itself; add in childhood trauma and negative self-talk, and in time you are left feeling helpless and asking yourself, “how did I/we get here?”. You want to feel better and do better but despite your best shot you just can’t figure it out. I get it! I offer individual and couples therapy where you will have the opportunity to heal, resest, and move forward in the way you've been dreaming of.

I approach every counselling relationship with curiosity, enthusiasm, and hope.
No counsellor is the right fit for everyone, I know. In the past decade I have learned that my approach is often a good fit for people who seek healing after trauma (long past and recent events), and I have a special interest in supporting those healing in the wake of traumatic bereavement. I also work with individuals who find that their day-to-day routines are simply not working anymore, sometimes because of a loss or a change in circumstance and other times because their entire sense of self is in transition. If you are asking "who am I now?" or "how do I live with this?" my services may be a good fit.

I believe that every person has the innate ability to live and harness an authentically bold and heart-centred life. Trauma and oppression disconnects us from this truth leaving behind lasting wounds that hurt our relationship to ourselves and others. I have worked with mental health, addiction and trauma for 20 years and have supported many individuals through their healing journey. I am trained in various integrative and relational therapies that address mind, body and spirit. I hold space and co-create safety so that you may listen and trust the wisdom within that empowers you towards more choice, freedom and boundless joy.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
