Is your chronic
illness
holding you back? Please know that you are worthy of living a fulfilling life. You are so much more than your
illness
. It can be challenging to carry on day to day. People around you may not understand just how much planning it takes to simply function when you are constantly low on energy, or how much effort you put in every single day to show up for yourself and others in spite of the
pain
. I see you, and I am here for you.

Do you experience
chronic pain
? Have you been diagnosed with a chronic
illness
?
Chronic pain
/
illness
can impact so many areas of your life - your ability to work, maintain your home or garden, and participate in activities with your family and friends. Living with
chronic pain
/
illness
can be exhausting, overwhelming and so very frustrating. Many people who experience daily
pain
begin to struggle with stress, anxiety and /or depression, which increases their
pain
and makes it even harder to cope.

Living with
chronic pain
and other physical and emotional issues can make life difficult. You struggle to keep up with the pace of your life. You compare yourself to the way you used to be, and to others who seem so much more active and ... well ... happy. Worries about your health may be overwhelming at times, and some days may feel like a struggle. The sometimes-unpredictable nature of your
illness
is frustrating, and may be taking a toll on your relationships. You may have developed depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. Sometimes, you may barely recognize the person you've become, or the life you're leading.

Have you been struggling with anxiety or depression? Feeling stuck? Maybe you had a traumatic experience and you know it still affects you but you don't know how. Often times, we can't simply talk our way out of trauma, depression or anxiety. It can impact the relationship between our body and mind and can even manifest as
chronic pain
, digestive issues, poor self-esteem and relationship difficulties. Art therapy can offer a container to explore difficult experiences and emotions, to hold things that may be difficult to put into words. It can provide effective coping strategies and help you build a healthy relationship with self.

When you have experienced trauma, your whole system can feel challenged day to day. You might struggle with persistent anxiety, feelings of shame and hopelessness and have a bleak outlook on the future. You can feel exhausted by your circumstances and truly at a loss for how to change or heal. Trauma impacts your thinking, your happiness, your quality of life and your joy. You can often find yourself engaging in behaviours that don't serve you, trying to numb out or manage the
pain
. It can feel hard to get close to anyone. It can be so hard to trust yourself, or other people. I completely understand, and I help people change daily.

If you are struggling day to day with general life issues and lack of motivation, drive, and ambition I would like to connect with you. Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
