Accepting new clients! Are you living with chronic pain, or other chronic illnesses? Are depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health issues unwelcome guests in your life? Are you frustrated because, despite treatment and your best efforts, you continue to struggle? Do you compare yourself to the way you used to be, and long for your "old self" back? Are you a family member struggling to support your loved one? Health issues can be overwhelming, unpredictable, and often take a toll on relationships. To complicate matters, finding appropriate health care is challenging, so accessing treatment can be difficult and frustrating.

How can I help you? If you have struggled with the pain of losing a loved one; if you have struggled with quieting the swirling mess of thoughts that won't settle in your mind; if you have, or are, struggling in a relationship and simply don't know what to do; if there are things you have experienced that you have struggled to share with anyone.
Finding a Therapist can sometimes feel daunting, even overwhelming. Trying to find the right fit when you only have a few lines and a picture to go by feels a bit like gambling. However, I am a big believer in listening to your instincts and that when you are open to healing, you will somehow be directed to where you need to be. Hello, my name is Paul and I have been a Registered Social Worker for over 24 years. My life purpose is to help others to find peace and healing with their emotional and mental well-being.

When you have experienced trauma, your whole system can feel challenged day to day. You might struggle with persistent anxiety, feelings of shame and hopelessness and have a bleak outlook on the future. You can feel exhausted by your circumstances and truly at a loss for how to change or heal. Trauma impacts your thinking, your happiness, your quality of life and your joy. You can often find yourself engaging in behaviours that don't serve you, trying to numb out or manage the pain. It can feel hard to get close to anyone. It can be so hard to trust yourself, or other people. I completely understand, and I help people change daily.

I work with adults, families and children impacted by trauma, loss and other life challenges. Having worked for years surrounded by trauma and alongside first responders, I discovered that healing often begins with taking a moment for yourself and having support of someone who can help us navigate the pain. It is natural to feel a bit anxious or unsure when seeking support at first. Envision our sessions like a friendly conversation where we tackle difficult issues using the tools I have, but always strive to leave feeling a bit lighter and more grounded than before.

My passion is working with adults experiencing trauma, life transitions, adjustment to illness, grief, relationship challenges.
Immediate, In Person availability. Sometimes, life becomes more than we can comfortably manage. We may feel unfulfilled, sad, irritable, worried and disconnected from who we are, who we love and the life we want to live. We may feel powerless to change our situation. However, change is possible! I work collaboratively with people of all ages, honoring their unique experiences while simultaneously supporting them to increase strategies and build resiliency and confidence. Whether it is a slight ‘tweak’ or a deeper concern you wish to explore, I am happy to provide support.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
