HELLO and WELCOME: Let's spend some time focusing on your needs. I will balance listening to your experiences, thoughts, and emotions with the introduction of exercises and techniques (often somatic or compassion-based) that will shift self-critical thoughts to self-compassion, build confidence, reduce stress and anxiety , bring ease to your mind, and soothe your autonomic nervous system. As an experienced therapist, I will empower, support, and guide you as you create positive and lasting change in your life. Clients report feeling understood and hopeful after the first session.

For over 15 years I've supported people as they've coped through depression, anxiety , and the implications of past traumatic experiences.
You are feeling so overwhelmed that it's hard to remember what "good" felt like. Some days you wonder if you ever actually felt good. On top of it all, there's Covid, and all these unprecedented worries, and limitations. The minor strains you felt in your life are suddenly exploding. Perhaps you work from home as you try to balance the needs of your family, and struggle with juggling it all. Maybe you feel angry and dread an uncertain future. Many people feel hopeless, frustrated, anxious, and stressed. You are challenged to manage enormous change with little time to process it. You feel like you are at the end of your rope.

You may be experiencing depression, anxiety , grief, addiction, or other symptoms. You may wish to become more mindful, deal with past trauma, develop greater insight, make meaning, change old patterns or unwanted behaviours, develop new habits, pursue new goals, enlarge your sense of what is possible in life, and find greater peace and self-acceptance. If you are finding that psychological distress is interfering with your ability to enjoy life, maintain mutually satisfying relationships, and/or fulfilling work, psychotherapy can be very helpful.

Finding a Therapist can sometimes feel daunting, even overwhelming. Trying to find the right fit when you only have a few lines and a picture to go by feels a bit like gambling. However, I am a big believer in listening to your instincts and that when you are open to healing, you will somehow be directed to where you need to be. Hello, my name is Paul and I have been a Registered Social Worker for well over 20 years, having worked in multiple fields, across the age spectrum.

I have over 20 years experience providing evidence based treatments (research has proven work) for a range of mood and anxiety disorders, as well as specialized training working with individuals who are medically complex or bereaved. In therapy, we would work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation in order to ensure the best possible outcome. Therapy also has the potential to help you gain insight about yourself (health and unhealthy patterns), to learn new ways of coping with stressors, and to identify value driven goals for living a more meaningful life.

My areas of specialty include working with people who live with trauma, complex trauma, depression, and anxiety .
Empathy, compassion, and curiosity are the cornerstones of my approach. As a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive clinician, I work with adults whose lives and well-being have been impacted by their lived experiences. If you’re struggling with your mental health, or feeling overwhelmed by the things that have happened to you, I can help you to sort through your thoughts and feelings. Building a life with greater clarity and stability is worth working towards, and my kind, non-judgmental approach can help you do just that. Together we will work to re-imagine your life stories, and tap into the intrinsic wisdom and skill you possess.

In my practice, I take an integrative approach in my therapy work to address issues of anxiety , depression, difficulties managing relationships, emotions, grief and trauma. I believe that experiences in our families and early relationships have an important role in shaping who we are, including our thoughts, feelings and beliefs, and influence how we are affected by our experiences throughout our lives. Understanding our attachment experiences, our own needs in relationships, and how we can learn to cope with emotions will help us make the changes we want in our lives.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
