You're fed up and frustrated. No matter how hard you try you feel like you're just not good enough. You may find yourself saying “yes” when you want to say “no,” replaying interactions in your mind, or feeling like you’re constantly managing how others feel. You get angry quickly, can't control your emotions and have been called "oversensitive." You care a lot about other people, you try your best all the time, but you are left feeling overwhelmed, alone, and exhausted. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone and these patterns are more common than you might think.

While I’m also here to help with “regular teen stuff,” or to help get the hang of transitioning into adulthood, my main focus is treating specific mental health concerns using therapy approaches that are proven to work well for the following: CBT for anxiety, depression, and eating disorders; CPT for trauma and PTSD; and ERP for OCD.
Accepting new clients! It’s no secret that being a young person can be tough. This is a time of life when responsibilities and expectations pile up and stress becomes more common. For some, overcoming these challenges is just part of growing up, and they get through it. But when mental health issues are added into the mix, it can make everything feel even harder, sometimes even impossible to manage. Are you a teen or young adult (ages 12-30), or the parent of a youth, struggling with mental health? Reach out to me to see how I can help!

RestoreHope Therapy is offering sessions to meet clients where they are at. As a seasoned therapist, I hold space for women as they navigate transitions in life. A graduate of 2006, I enjoy helping clients navigate their feelings and finding practical and profound solutions during life's challenges. Telephone/Video counselling is currently available and I am open to people walking in nature while they are speaking to me on the phone. Of course you would have to sign a liability waiver in regards to your safety while you are walking, but some clients find it helpful.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
