I have significant experience in adoption and non-traditional families.
Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul, be just another human soul. -C.G Jung. I have letters after my name, degrees on my wall, and years of experience; but, more importantly than any of that, I am a compassionate human-being, who will not judge and can provide you with a safe place for growth and healing. I have more than 20 years experience working with individuals and families dealing with a variety of life struggles. I hold both a Bachelor's and Master's of Social Work. I use several therapeutic modalities during therapy sessions, tailoring my approach to meet my client’s unique needs.

Professionally I have supported individuals with highly complex needs for 25 years. This has ranged from assessment and treatment of moderate to severely challenging behaviours and specialized services for people with mental health challenges, dual diagnosis, learning challenges, acquired brain injury and post-concussion rehabilitation and counselling. In my experience it is essential to first understand individuals as unique individuals irregardless of their label or challenges and develop a trusting relationship. In this context difficulties can be discussed openly and change and growth can occur.

My name is Steve and I created Kintsugi Counselling because I know that we all do better when we have authentic, insightful, and secure relationships with ourselves and the world around us. Most people who come to me are struggling to live authentically and feel they belong and are valued. They wonder where their relationships have gone and don't know what to do. Often they have been diagnosed with ADHD, depression, or anxiety disorders, but do not feel medications are the answer to their deep stress and sadness. Many of my clients are adoptees, were raised in foster care, or suffered early life attachment losses or trauma.

In the past 10 years in the field, I have developed interest in helping people with emotional understanding and regulation, trauma/PTSD treatment and interpersonal challenges. If you are looking to make changes to how you respond to or express your emotions, we would be a good fit. If you are want to manage your trauma symptoms rather than having them manage you, we would be a good fit. If you are someone who wants to develop further insight and understanding in order to move forward, we would be a good fit.

Is depression dragging you down? Has anxiety been coming around to bother you? Is a problem getting in the way of your goals? As we go trough life, we face challenges that can impact us and our personal growth going forward. Sometimes the things we have been doing in the past to cope and get by don't seem to work anymore, or don't have the same effect as they did before. We need to find a new way of thinking and behaving to readjust, cope, and heal from the traumas in our past so we can manage the challenges ahead of us. Lets team up together to take control of your story and make the changes you would like to see in your life.

My extensive experience working with individuals and families has led me to believe in the immense human capacity for change, recovery, and healing. I am a clinical social worker and view psychotherapy as a gentle, coordinated dance between therapist and client. I am interested in knowing you, your challenges, triumphs and your life story. While I am able to take a supportive role by listening and acknowledging your emotions, I can also take an active role when necessary. Therefore, you can count on hearing my take on the presented issues and my advice.

Are you feeling weighed down by the pain of loss or trauma? Perhaps you’re experiencing the confusion that arises when life doesn’t go as planned. Or the self-doubt that can come from choices you’ve made in the past. Along with sadness, you might feel anger or a sense of shame. As a survivor of religious trauma, I have lived experience in the process of moving from this dark and lonely place to healing and hope. Whether you find yourself questioning the beliefs you grew up with or those of a group you chose to align with, we can gently bring what makes you uncomfortable into the light of day and move towards a brighter future.

I enjoy working with individuals, families, and couples. This might be the first time you are seeking counselling or you may be seeking for a different counselling experience, picking the right counsellor for you is important. It is important to understand how we interpret our experiences and how they affects us. Our environments also have the ability to impact the way we interpret our experiences and interactions; it can be helpful to develop an awareness of the common miscommunication we experience based on our past experiences and in challenging ourselves to take steps towards wellness.

I believe we all dream to live lives of more and lives of less. More: happiness, peace, joy, health, achieving meaningful goals, and joy in relationships. The opposite is also true, we seek lives with less. Less: stress, illness, negativity, pain, bad relationship habits, trauma, anger, and disconnection. Are you one of millions of 1st generation Canadians trapped between 2 worlds? Is it time to create your own life? Do you experience Anxiety, depression, maternal loss/fertility struggles, growing up "fine but feeling empty", or loveless parenting--all of which can hold you back or instill panic. Small steps can feel overwhelming.

I offer talk, art therapy and play-based counselling and psychotherapy for children, youth and families. One of my core beliefs is that, like a compass trying to find its true north, everyone intuitively orientates towards health. I am respectful of each participant's unique journey back to health and wholeness. Most extended insurance plans provide full or partial coverage for psychotherapy services.

People often come for therapy as they are hurting or distressed and they have found that they are confused about how to move forward. They can be worried about someone else, are having difficulty with relationships with their spouse, children, or coworkers. Some people prefer to attend therapy on their own, while others wish to include the family member they are concerned about. I see people with depression, anxiety, attention difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse, adjustment issues (separation and divorce).

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioural or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioural, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
