I’m Shahed, and I help adults who feel stuck in painful relationship cycles they can’t seem to break. Maybe closeness feels overwhelming, or distance leaves you anxious. You might replay old patterns with partners, friends, or family -wondering why the same hurt shows up. If attachment wounds, insecure attachment, trust issues, or fear of rejection are shaping your relationships, we can uncover the “why” and build new, more secure ways of connecting.

Many of us have learned to prioritize the needs of others in order to feel loved, accepted, or secure in our relationships. While these patterns of people-pleasing, overgiving, or self-sacrifice may once have helped us cope, they can leave us feeling disconnected, exhausted, and stuck in unhealthy relationship dynamics.
My aim is to help you build self-awareness, self-trust, and healthy boundaries so you can create more balanced, fulfilling relationships with yourself and others.
Together, we can explore attachment patterns, strengthen your sense of self, and help you cultivate more secure, reciprocal connections.

At times, we have periods in our lives that are very challenging, seem slow moving or stagnant, and evoke intense experiences. Making the decision to begin counselling can be empowering, as it takes courage and a willingness to explore change. The cycle of seasons is a helpful metaphor in relating to cycles of change in one's life; a dynamic process that inherently carries potential for growth and renew. I accompany people in meaningfully learn about themselves and in cultivating tools to address what gets in the way of what they want for their life.

People reach out at every stage of their process - some are looking for a complete shift, while others simply need a way to make sense of where they are right now. My practice supports individuals, couples, families, and those in CNM dynamics as they navigate the complexities of human relationships. My role is to meet you where you are, providing the insight and active tools to uncover unconscious patterns and address the conscious ones that influence how you move through the world.

My areas of specialization are relationship issues, caregiver support, grief & bereavement, palliative care, HIV/AIDS/Cancer, coming out, internalized homophobia, transgender issues, addiction recovery, and codependency.
The counselling process is similar to carefully peeling back the layers of an onion. You need to feel safe and in control as the layers of your story are revealed. Together, we uncover deeper parts of the self that may be hidden from conscious thought ... old scripts and tapes that are still playing today and causing you pain and anxiety. You can change your life by bringing these old patterns and voices into the light of day for examination. My work is to support, guide, and challenge you so you can empower yourself to deal with past issues and present concerns.

I frequently work with people who are "under-loved" and end up in relationships where they try to impress their partners to get their love and attention - aka codependency and people pleasing.
Understanding feelings of CONFusion, EXHAUstion, or ISOLATion in relationships requires examining early attachment patterns. Codependent behaviors, such as suppressing your true self for approval/validation, prioritizing others’ needs over your own, or focusing solely on another person, create unhealthy dynamics. These patterns frequently attract individuals with narcissistic, dismissive/avoidant or patriarchally dominant personalities, leading to emotionally tough relationships.
Over time, this can result in feelings of betrayal, abandonment, triggering depression or harmful coping mechanisms (substance abuse-alcohol, overeating)

I specialize in helping adults who struggle with attachment and codependency, the people who over-give or over-avoid, over-function, and lose themselves in relationships.
Accepting New Clients! You keep ending up in the same patterns. Maybe you give too much and lose yourself in relationships. Maybe you pick partners who can't meet you halfway. Maybe closeness feels unsafe, or distance feels unbearable, or you swing between the two and can't figure out why. This isn't a character flaw. It's attachment, the way you learned to connect (or protect yourself from connection) based on what you experienced early on. And the frustrating part? Knowing this doesn't automatically change it.

Accepting New Clients! If you and your partner keep having the same fight, you are not alone. Maybe you get defensive, shut down, or feel like you are walking on eggshells. You might feel more like roommates than partners, or miss the closeness you used to have. Underneath the arguments is often a cycle where one of you reaches and the other protects, and both end up feeling unheard. Couples therapy can help you slow things down, understand what is happening between you, and rebuild connection that feels safe and steady.

You’re smart, intuitive, and self-aware, but stuck in a painful relationship cycle. Maybe you're attracted to all the wrong people, overlooking red flags that point to toxic behaviour or narcissism. Or maybe it's more of a cycle of defensiveness, invalidation, and hours long text message arguments that never get resolved. You wonder if you're crazy, or if they're just gaslighting you. You wonder if it's all your fault, frantically reading self-help books and binging podcasts and tiktoks looking for the answers. You're in fight-or-flight, walking on eggshells trying to finally "get it right" so you can finally relax

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
