Being a lesbian psychotherapist allows me to have a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
Self-acceptance feels like shedding a heavy coat you didn’t even realize you were wearing. It’s the quiet relief of no longer needing to hide parts of yourself, the sense of freedom in knowing you no longer have to justify your feelings to anyone, including yourself. It's like stepping into sunlight after years of being in the shadows, where every step forward feels lighter. It’s knowing you’re worthy of love, belonging, and happiness, just as you are. I'm Mel, and I’m a Registered Psychotherapist with a passion for providing affirming and inclusive mental health care to individuals of all sexual and gender identities.

I am a registered psychotherapist, but also a human being. If you don't feel like traditional therapy is for you, then I work with you to find what is. I specialize in: Trauma, PTSD, BPD, CPTSD, anxiety and depression. I am Queer-LGBTQ2S- non-gender conforming. I look at therapy as a path towards healing, with a holistic approach towards health and mental wellness. Trauma-informed expressive therapy is based on bringing what is unconscious to conciousness in a safe way and finding containers that work with you to help you process and unpack in order to heal.

“The trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more.” I often work with LGBTQ2IA individuals and couples struggling with shame/guilt, identity, place, belonging/community, sexuality, and spirituality/meaning-making. People who feel as if something is missing, even if all might be well on paper. When feeling unheard, unwanted, and unsafe, taking the first step toward fulfillment and inner harmony is an act of courage. Rejecting shame lets us embrace hope and possibility. Together, we can explore ways of healing and growth that honour your unique identity and need for safety and change in an often challenging world.

You are the person your friends and family come to with their problems as you appear to have it all together. You are a high achiever who like to get things done. You've been described as industrious, passionate, serious, and intense. You are holding so much for everyone else, but you feel overwhelmed. Below this confident exterior, anxiety brews. You are a deeply feeling person and yet sometimes feel unseen. Your inner critic can be loud and it often tells you that your worth is in your achievements. I am here to help you discover why you feel this way, to hold space, and to explore the inner workings of your multi-layered self.

Therapy that feels human. Real talk, the occasional swear, and zero judgment. This isn’t therapy for the polite version of you. It’s a space for the stuff you can’t say out loud anywhere else. We’ll unpack the truth, question the patterns, and make space for what’s real, so you can meet yourself without filters.

Have you been told by loved ones to go to therapy? On paper your life looks ‘fine’ - you excel at work, hobbies or school but deep down you feel disconnected. Growing up, you never felt like your problems were big enough to matter or that others had it worse. You always had food on the table but you never felt like you belonged or that you were good enough. You cruised through life, avoiding emotions and conflict until suddenly everything came crashing to the surface. You’re ready for change but you don’t know where to start. I’m here to help you uncover the real you and connect again.

I work with children, teens, and adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or just not like themselves lately. Sometimes that looks like big emotions: anxiety, sadness, anger, or constant worry. Other times it’s challenges at school, in relationships, or within the family. And sometimes, there’s no clear reason at all, just a feeling that something’s off. You or your child might be wanting to feel more steady, more connected, or more like yourself again. The people I work with are often looking for support that feels real, kind, and easy to talk to.

We all have stories that we tell about ourselves, our lives, and that others tell about us. Often when we’re struggling, these stories are about feeling powerless, hopeless, scared, and are full of shame and self-doubt. My approach explores these narratives, creating space for new, richer stories to emerge. If it feels right to you, we’ll explore the stories different parts of yourself tell you, drawing you closer to your values, deconstructing your patterns and uncovering your strengths and resiliency to find new paths forward. We will build a deeper understanding of what you've been through, where you are, and where you're going.

Becoming a parent can bring joy and fulfillment, but the changes and stress that accompany the early years can also have substantial impacts on a parent’s mental health. Nothing can truly prepare us for this significant new role. New parents are often overwhelmed with how how all consuming caring for a baby can be, may experience challenging shifts in their important relationships, and my not yet know how to cope or access the support they need. Parents in later stages are not immune to struggles either - managing toddler behaviour, learning to manage our big feelings alongside our little ones - often without any roadmap.

A lot of my work with folks involves: big life transitions, identity questions, gender, sexuality, depression, trauma, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship issues, navigating neurodivergence (incl. gifted, ASD, ADHD, AudHD), existential anxieties, parenting challenges, etc. Of utmost importance is establishing a strong therapeutic relationship, as we work deeply to achieve your goals. My own lived experience of trauma, neurocomplexity, mh issues, sexuality/identity work and experience of parenthood help inform and support the work we will do together. I bring my full 'spicy' self to my work. Client feedback is that I'm "real".

What is lesbian-affirming therapy?
Lesbian-affirming therapy is a type of mental health support that fully affirms and reflects a client's lesbian identity. It is rooted in acceptance and does not attempt to change or question an individual's sexual orientation. In this type of therapy, clients work with a therapist who understands the unique experiences of lesbian women. This support is especially important, as research shows that lesbian individuals face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges compared to heterosexual populations. Lesbian-affirming therapy acknowledges that lesbian individuals may encounter specific stressors—such as coming out challenges, family rejection, workplace discrimination, and minority stress—that require specialised understanding and intervention. Lesbian-affirming therapists often work with clients across all age groups, from adolescents navigating their emerging identity to adults and older individuals addressing life transitions and relationship concerns. Many therapists also provide couples therapy for lesbian partners, helping them navigate relationship dynamics, communication challenges, or external stressors that may impact their relationship. It is important to note that therapists provide talk therapy and counseling services but do not prescribe medication—if medication is needed for conditions like depression or anxiety, they will coordinate care with a psychiatrist or primary care physician who can provide psychiatric medication management alongside therapeutic support.

Why should I see a lesbian therapist?
Some clients prefer to work with lesbian therapists who may bring personal lived experience to the therapeutic relationship. Choosing to work with a lesbian therapist can offer a deeper sense of connection, comfort, and shared understanding. A therapist who identifies as lesbian may require clients to give less background explanation—whether it’s about navigating romantic relationships, feeling unseen in certain spaces, or processing the impact of past relationship challenges. However, a non-lesbian therapist with strong training and a sincere commitment to LGBTQ+ affirmation can be equally effective. The most important factor is finding a therapist who respects your identity and fosters trust, safety, and understanding. However, a non-lesbian therapist with strong training and a sincere commitment to LGBTQ+ affirmation can be equally effective. The most important factor is finding a therapist who respects your identity and fosters trust, safety, and understanding. Additionally, many lesbian-affirming therapists can connect clients to other providers or community-based resources—such as bisexual support groups or LGBTQ+ organisations—that offer additional affirming spaces for connection.

How do I find a lesbian therapist?
The Psychology Today online directory is a helpful tool for finding lesbian-affirming therapists. You can use search filters to identify therapists who specialise in LGBTQ+ care and work specifically with bisexual clients. You can also filter by clinical specialties, therapeutic approaches, accepted insurance, session costs, and languages spoken to find the right fit. Look for profiles where therapists explicitly mention working with lesbian clients, or where they describe their approach as identity-affirming, inclusive, or trauma-informed. Many providers will also list their own identities, which may help you find someone with shared lived experience if that is important to you. You can also look for credentials or continuing education in areas such as LGBTQ+ mental health, trauma-informed care, and intersectionality.
