My professional training includes
Gestalt
Therapy, Brainspotting, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, and clinical mindfulness in addition to many years practising mindfulness.
You've learned to cope by controlling your feelings and while it's always worked for you in the past, lately it feels like the floodgate is going to break. You're often criticizing yourself and worrying about everything that could go wrong. You feel exhausted and overwhelmed and aren't sure how much longer you can keep the flood of emotions at bay. Before it all comes crashing down on you, you wisely know that it's time to make a change ... and you've come to the right place.

I have trained in several areas of humanistic and integrative psychotherapy including dialectic behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, narrative therapy, emotionally focused therapy, motivational interviewing, family systems therapy, couples therapy and
gestalt
therapy.
(For speed of reply emails are sent to our admin team) I believe you are the expert in your life and even though you may not know it, you have all the answers within you. Unfortunately sometimes life can make accessing these answers difficult. Trauma, mental health issues, addiction, work and family pressures can all impact our ability to connect to our inner wisdom and happiness. I have found through personal experience that talking to a trained professional in psychotherapy who is kind, caring, non judgmental and emotionally attuned can support the process of being able to listen to ourselves and reduce our suffering.

I enjoy working with women, trans and non-binary people who have had long-term mental health struggles and a history of trauma. The people I see are often struggling with understanding the impact of childhood wounds, stressful relationships involving difficulty with intimacy or autonomy, coping with the after-effects of sexual violence and/or feeling stuck in emotions such as shame and loneliness. These people may be trying to reconcile their values and desired way of being in the world with intense reactions that seem to come out of the blue. I also do work regarding gender, sexuality and neurodiversity.

ACCEPTING NEW IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL THERAPY CLIENTS. I believe in honouring the person in front of me, making room for you to tell your story, and working collaboratively towards your goals. Much of my work is relational (i.e. with couples, families or groups). I value and reflect on the unique perspectives and needs of every person who is courageously reaching out for therapy. Often taking the first step is the hardest. I offer a private and safe space to explore your needs and struggles. Often we lose sight of our greatest strengths in everyday life. I offer acceptance base therapy and then I help you work towards change. Most of my experience has been with young adults. I truly enjoy starting an internal journey with you. Different parts of you come alive in the therapy room. When you know yourself and your different parts it is much easier to cope with life's difficulties.

I have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. I specialize in a somatic (body-mind) approach to resolve issues that interfere with one's happiness and well being. We will look at how early life experiences affect us and our relationships. This helps in developing a greater understanding in how one behaves in their current life, creating more options for lasting change. This work is very effective in treating depression by helping one feel more aliveness, energy and a sense of well being. It helps with anxiety by providing tools to create a sense of calm and presence.

Hi, I'm Matt. Sometimes we don’t know how to get to where we want. Sometimes we think we know, but just can’t seem to get started. It can all feel like too much and we can become overwhelmed. Our goals can seem just out of reach. At these times, what we might need is a little help and support. Counselling can help. No matter what your goals are, we can work towards them together. Counselling can be a way to rediscover your strengths, re-frame your past, and utilize your experience to move positively into the future. It is a place to get curious about why you are where you are, and explore what might be holding you back.

Are you feeling stuck in an older version of yourself that you know is ready to change? Do you live with the feeling that there's a truer version of "you" that's dying to come out? Are you held back by complicated relationships from your past, that seem to keep you in a holding pattern? Are you a couple stuck in a pattern that keeps you apart? Often we hit a place where we know we are ready for a transition, but we're just not sure what to do next. That's when therapy can be the most powerful. It's my greatest privilege to walk alongside folks just like you who are journeying towards a more meaningful, fulfilled, authentic life.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behaviour, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
