Anxiety, depression and addiction often are signs of deeper unresolved issues.
Quite often, a combination of techniques offers the best outcome. I have applied Emotional Focused Therapy, Mindfulness Based Techniques and Cognitive Therapy to help many people heal. I have seen how Hypnosis and Body Focused therapies have been powerful in bringing clarity and accelerating change.

I work with individuals, couples, and families on relationship and intimacy issues, stress, anxiety, depression, self-worth, grief and life transitions.
Hi! I'm Gillian (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychotherapist and a Canadian Certified Counsellor. I have studied mental health across the lifespan and have over 15 years of experience working in healthcare. I believe that at the heart of being human is the desire for connection with others and our world. But sometimes it can feel like we are stuck and disconnected. As a therapist, I set out to build strong connections with my clients, making them feel seen, heard and cared for. Together we set goals and make a treatment plan, taking into account each individual’s unique experiences, culture, and beliefs.

I have experience working with a variety of areas including anxiety, spiritual exploration, stress management, life transitions, self-esteem, and forming healthy relationships.
Sometimes it is difficult to make sense of what we are feeling and the experiences we endure through life. In therapy, we will work together to uncover and understand what's truly happening in your life. My goal is to provide you with a warm and non-judgmental space where you feel supported in your goals—so that when you come out of therapy, you feel confident to take on life in the present, and equipped to handle the future.

I have walked my own road with trauma and mental health, and have lived experience parenting anxious, neurodivergent, and medically complex children.
Whether it be you or a loved one, most of us have experienced some form of struggle or loss. In today’s fast-paced world many of us are also juggling the competing demands of work and home life; both have become further complicated by technology and social media. We live in a world where we are more connected, yet lonelier than ever. For those with children, we are inundated with parenting advice, leaving us questioning whether we are doing enough, or doing it right. With all the information overload it can be difficult to know where to get started when it comes to our emotional health.

I focus on helping you uncover what's getting in the way of the life you want to live - whether its anxious thoughts, low mood, perfectionism, or feeling stuck.
Individuals struggling with mental health want to feel heard, understood and authentically seen. When you are struggling with mental health at times it can feel like no one really sees you. I hope to be able to change that and that's where I begin: by creating a space where your experience truly matters. I draw from evidence based approaches like CBT, ACT and mindfulness, but I believe therapy should not feel like a formula. Each person is different, so I tailor what I use to fit who you are - not the other way around.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
