Anger Management Therapists in Kitchener, ON
You might describe your life as “fine,” or say you’re getting by, surviving, doing okay. That’s how a lot of people feel... and it works, until it doesn’t. Maybe you feel disconnected from your emotions but have learned to function anyway. Maybe you avoid discomfort or push yourself to cope through it. Maybe you’ve repeated the same behaviors for so long that they just feel like who you are, even if something inside you knows they don’t quite fit.

Do you have reoccurring memories of unpleasant and distressing times from your past? Do you think you “should have” gotten over it a long time ago? Maybe you find yourself being reactive and struggle to calm down? Are you triggered by everyday experiences and become stressed by things others seem to be unbothered by? Maybe you are struggling with a negative inner voice, self sabotaging and struggling in a battle of what you know, versus how you feel. These are all symptoms of trauma. I use a combination of EMDR, trigger reduction techniques, education to help you understand what is happening, and tools to support you while you heal.

I have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. I specialize in a somatic (body-mind) approach to resolve issues that interfere with one's happiness and well being. We will look at how early life experiences affect us and our relationships. This helps in developing a greater understanding in how one behaves in their current life, creating more options for lasting change. This work is very effective in treating depression by helping one feel more aliveness, energy and a sense of well being. It helps with anxiety by providing tools to create a sense of calm and presence.

I like to paraphrase the quote from Uncle Iroh, "There is nothing wrong with letting someone who cares about you, help you." You need not do it alone, and I care. I'm your guy. I work with people, meeting them where they are and tailoring my approach to their needs, which is what I will do with you. We will talk, get to understand the problem, and collaborate on treatment. I have a catalogue of therapies we can use to approach things, and I developed that because no one thing works for everyone. Thus, we will find what works for you, and get you closer to your therapy goals.

Anger Management Counsellors
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
