It may surprise you to learn that sex is NOT supposed to hurt… yet for 20% of women, it does. Maybe the pain started slowly, or maybe it came on fast. You thought it would go away, but it didn’t. maybe you sought medical advice but, unfortunately, it hasn’t been that helpful. Eventually, the pain is impacting all parts of your life. It’s hard to focus. Hard to work. Maybe you avoid dating all together, worrying “who would want to be with someone who can’t have sex?”. If you are partnered, maybe you worry that your partner will get tired of your pain. Maybe your partner doesn’t even know…

The path to parenthood has not looked like what you expected. Maybe you’re desperate to start your family, but it’s not happening and you’re terrified that parenthood isn’t going to happen for you. Maybe you’ve experienced the devastation of pregnancy loss and are left grieving in isolation, wondering “does this grief even count if it was “just” a miscarriage?”. Or perhaps you want to add to your family, but this time around it just doesn’t seem to be happening. Baby showers are devastating. “Pregnancy” becomes a swear word. Sex is no longer fun, it is simply a method to conceive/means to finally seeing that double pink line…

I work with professionals, parents, and overextended hearts who carry the weight of it all quietly. Maybe you’re doing okay—managing work, showing up for others—but life feels busy, distracted, and a little disconnected. You want to take better care of yourself, build healthier habits, feel more connected in your relationships, and live more intentionally… but it’s hard to find the time or energy to follow through. Productivity and constant doing have been glorified—often at the expense of rest, connection, and the deeper parts of ourselves. We’ve lost sight of what truly matters.

Do you feel like you're always saying yes when you want to say no, replaying every conversation in your head, heart pounding over things that shouldn't feel this big? Maybe you grew up disappearing at the sound of footsteps, always scanning, bracing, reading the room before you could read words. Now you're the reliable one overachieving, overfunctioning, trying to prevent disaster before it hits. You’ve done the apps, the books, the deep breaths, the cold plunges, maybe a few glasses of wine to quiet the noise. But inside, you're frozen. Longing for something you’ve never fully had: a nervous system that feels safe and like home.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
