Add into the mix the expectations that come with being a high-performance individual - whether in sports, academics, the arts, or elsewhere - and it can all start to feel like too much.
As a qualifying therapist who participated in high-performance sports for nearly a decade, I know how expectations can exacerbate the demanding challenges of early adulthood. In a safe, empathic, and queer-affirming space to explore life's challenges, I combine my lived experience with a holistic and integrative approach rooted in DBT and ACT.

Do you wonder if life could be better, or hope that you can break free from the emotional barriers holding you back? I have worked for several years in the field of mental health. I believe that mental health is a continuum for all of us. With my skills as an occupational therapist and certified diplomate with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, my goals are to help young people and adults develop functional strategies for living, find healthy coping mechanisms and understand how to change their behavior through changing the way they think. I believe we are all "becoming", and look forward to helping you become your best self.

Therapy shouldn't feel like a chore. While it might sometimes be hard to hear what is discussed in therapy, overall you should leave feeling like you've gained something useful or even transformative. Over time, you should feel you are getting stronger, more resilient and have shed layers of fear and anxiety. Of course this process can be overwhelming at times and you might not always progress on the timeframe that you thought you would, but when therapy goes well, you should feel more settled and more clear about your life. You should gain understanding about yourself and others and have a renewed sense of purpose and passion

Experiencing a mental health issue is more common than not, particularly regarding careers. When stress affects our ability to function on or off the job, it's time for help. Helping clients work through these challenges and reengage with their lives is what treatment is about. Based on a previous 25+ years as a career responder, I am familiar with stress, trauma, and maintaining balance. I also treat clients who have never worn a uniform. I see therapy goals as holistic and pragmatic by building understanding, strategies, and practices to build relief, resilience, support functioning, and recovery.

At all stages of life individuals and families can find themselves wanting change. Approaches to counselling need to fit the needs of the individuals looking for support. My practice focuses primarily on supporting children, teens and young adults navigate issues related to relationships, family dynamics, self identity, anxiety and stress. Young children often have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. Children are invited to express themselves in counselling through art, puppetry, sand and play.

Have you been feeling stressed out lately? Are you noticing changes in your mood? Are you finding it hard to sleep at night or noticing unpleasant physiological symptoms such as headaches or digestive issues? The impacts of untreated mental health conditions, as well as an unregulated nervous system and your body's increased stress response ("fight or flight") can have lasting impacts on your mental + physical health, and overall well-being. Matthew utilizes an eclectic & integrative psychotherapeutic approach and helps you rediscover your "wise" self to build your capacity to manage mental wellness, so it is not managing you.

How does sports psychology work?

Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualisation, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?

The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?

Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?

Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
