“If I really love my partner I should want to have sex with them…right?”; “There must be something wrong with me or with the relationship if I don’t want to have sex.”; “If they aren’t getting sex from me, they’re going to find it somewhere else…” Do any of these sound familiar? Do you have a running counter of the number of days since the last time you had sex, and every day that passes leads to more and more stress “it’s been too long, I’m going to need to do it soon…”

Maybe you avoid sex all together. You wonder: “What is everyone talking about when they say sex is great? What am I missing?” You worry: “If I really loved my partner, if we were really compatible, we wouldn’t be having sexual problems.” You ask: “Maybe I’m sexually broken?”

You look at your life, and find that something feels off. Maybe your sex life is not what you imagined it would be. Or you’re not feeling fulfilled in your relationship/s. Perhaps anxiety, low mood, self-criticism, or shame get in the way. Or you’ve faced a stressor or health issue that has brought new roadblocks. You may have even been on autopilot for so long, being the kind of person you “should” be for others, that you don’t know exactly who you are anymore.

Maybe sex feels more like stress than pleasure. Maybe your body, mind, or identity doesn’t fit the scripts you’ve been told are “normal.” You might struggle with desire, communication, painful sex, performance anxiety, distracting thoughts during intimacy, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your partner(s). Perhaps you find yourself asking, “Is this normal?” or “Why can’t I just relax?” When sex and relationships don’t work the way we expect, it’s easy to feel frustrated, ashamed, or alone. The good news? You’re not broken, and you’re not alone.

The path to parenthood has not looked like what you expected. Maybe you’re desperate to start your family, but it’s not happening and you’re terrified that parenthood isn’t going to happen for you. Maybe you’ve experienced the devastation of pregnancy loss and are left grieving in isolation, wondering “does this grief even count if it was “just” a miscarriage?”. Or perhaps you want to add to your family, but this time around it just doesn’t seem to be happening. Baby showers are devastating. “Pregnancy” becomes a swear word. Sex is no longer fun, it is simply a method to conceive/means to finally seeing that double pink line…

Are you finding everything too stressful right now? Is that showing up as anxiety, insomnia, emotional reactivity, memory or concentration issues? Are you feeling foggy or edgy? The last few years have been tough. In my practice I use more traditional talk therapy while also working directly with your neurophysiology. Neurofeedback actively helps your brain rewire its stress patterns and I use Deep Brain Reorienting and Brainspotting to get to the root of an issue without overwhelm or emotional flooding. If talk therapy alone has not given you what you needed, perhaps more directly accessing your neurophysiology will!

Trauma changes you, but it does not have to define you. It is a chapter in your story, but it does not have to be your entire story. With 14 years of experience working with survivors of childhood abuse, sexual violence, and emotional neglect, I understand the complexity and depth of the pain you may carry. Sometimes that pain manifests itself as complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or dissociation, leading to feelings of helplessness or hopelessness. Although healing from trauma can feel like an overwhelming journey, you don’t have to walk that path alone.

Why might an individual want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?
A sex-positive or kinky individual may want to see a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist because the client may feel safer and more supported discussing their experiences and challenges. A therapist who identifies as kink-friendly will have experience with clients having diverse sexual preferences and will likely be nonjudgmental and supportive about issues brought to the table. It is important to note that sex-positive, kink-allied individuals may find equal success with therapists who do not have such specialised knowledge and background. The most important factor in the success of therapy is for the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond.
Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in sex-positive, kink-allied treatment?
Generally, no. There are limited training programs and unofficial accreditations that therapists can pursue, but a therapist’s expertise will ultimately come from their previous experience with similar clients, their engagement with organisations that promote sex positivity or kink-allied lifestyles, and the importance they place on safety and cultural sensitivity.
How can individuals recognise a good sex-positive, kink-allied therapist?
An experienced therapist is able to help clients explore their sexual identity and expression and relieve any discomfort or stigma attached to discussing such matters and the client’s overall challenges. A therapist who is sex-positive and kink-allied is able to create an environment that honors a client’s experience and sexual preferences. To recognise a good therapist, clients can simply ask directly about topics and issues important to them and gauge their comfort level and connection with a clinician based on the responses.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist with a focus on sex positivity and alternative sexual lifestyles?
Some individuals may feel most comfortable knowing that the clinician they’re working with has a commitment to creating an atmosphere of sex positivity and has experience with relationship diversity and alternative relationship structures. Working with a sex-positive, kink-allied therapist may help clients respect their own challenges and improve identity-affirming treatment.
