Using various therapies such as emotion focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapies, person centered therapy, and mindfulness, we will find the tools and approach that best suits your needs.
As we go through life, we encounter circumstances that shape us in ways we are not always aware of. Because of those circumstances, we can sometimes develop coping strategies that can be counterproductive. Our unconscious mind keeps us in what feels familiar, and we can feel stuck in those negative cycles where we repeat the same patterns. I believe that everyone has the power to heal themselves and that professional help can guide us through that process. We will work collaboratively in the therapeutic relationship so that you can uncover those inner abilities to help you develop your full potential.

This emotion-focused, process-oriented, psychodynamic approach works towards lasting change efficiently by collaboratively combating unhelpful patterns and addressing core underlying emotions.
You are likely on this website because there is some aspect of your life that you are hoping to change. Perhaps you have experienced a history of unstable mood, depression, anxiety, or self-defeating behaviours. You might have tried to cope in ways that do not seem to work, or learn skills but they don't seem to stick, and somehow always end back in a place you don't want to be. If you feel that you have suffered for long enough and you have a strong desire to change the patterns that get you stuck, and process and heal from your core emotional struggle we can work together to make the changes necessary to help you move forward.

The therapeutic modalities that I use to support my clients include: CBT, trauma informed approaches, and psychodynamic methods.
I believe that the road to finding happiness and freedom begins with a simple principle, understanding that some things are within our control and some things are not. Whether you are controlled by anxiety, dreading the “what ifs” of the future. Or you are stuck in the past and find it difficult to move on, I believe I can help. I am dedicated to building a therapeutic alliance with my clients and working on an individual basis to help each, and every person realize their strengths to find their own solutions. I work with clients 18 and over to support them in recovering from anxiety, depression, stress and relationship challenges.

I offer a psychodynamic orientation (using a number of approaches as fitting to the client) to educate, coach, support, listen, offer skills and then transform perspective.
My perspective on mental health help is a coaching relationship where we work together to achieve your goals and arrive at your perspective on your best life. I believe deeply that our first inner voice is that of our caregivers in childhood and that the manner in which we are prepared to enter the world has everything to do with how we will manage stress, health, relationships, adversity and, our own happiness. It is not about blaming, but rather about understanding our perspective; how we came to arrive at making the decisions we have, and then gaining new perspective and skills to take control fully as healthy happy people.

At certain times in their lives, people experience problems that are too difficult to handle alone. When their usual modes of coping no longer work for them, they feel overwhelmed and may want to learn new ways of coping through psychotherapy. Even though ways of responding based on past experiences may no longer be helpful, people tend to repeat old patterns of behaving, thinking and feeling. In psychotherapy I can assist you to understand these "habits", to see alternatives and to change.

Jennifer works with clients who are ready to make a dedicated effort toward change. Many of us had unavailable caregivers whom did not have the tools to provide essential emotional support and understanding which then shaped our sense of shame and other core beliefs about our worth. As children we needed to feel safe and protected, to be guided with the appropriate balance of security and independence in order to develop confidence in our decision making. We learned to adapt and survive with coping strategies that continue to exist in the present and may no longer be necessary and potentially maladaptive.

You: "I am READY to feel better." Me: "Right on. I've got the tools. Let's get to work." This whole therapy business may seem a little weird to you, but you have been feeling a deep lack of connection to the things that really matter to you and you don't want to keep feeling this way. You've had some struggles earlier in your life, or more recently, that have impacted how you relate to others and how you related to the world in general, and you're not liking how this restriction, this disconnect feels. You've wanted to be a better coworker, partner, or father, and you're feeling really ready to invest the time to make it happen.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
