My therapeutic approach integrates insights from psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, mindfulness, and somatic (body) therapy.
Do you struggle with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, chronic pain, or OCD? Our emotional struggles can often accompany a disconnect between ourselves and others in our lives, and also between our minds and our emotions and bodies. When we do not feel whole we do not seem to be able to live fully and meaningfully within ourselves or in our relationships. You are not alone in this struggle. I can help you reconnect with yourself. We can work together to identify the underlying internal processes and address triggers to your difficulties to help you reach the change that you desire.

Using an integrated approach with clients that incorporates theory and exercises from ACT, CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based modalities and IFS.
Everyone has unique challenges and needs; however, we all share the same need to feel heard, understood and supported. Simply put, when we are authentically seen and heard, the way in which we navigate our lives and its challenges improves. It is important to me that I meet all clients with genuine empathy, honesty, and acceptance. I enjoy working from a strengths-based, positive therapeutic approach, and I believe that as the client, you are the expert of your own experience. My aim is to offer non-judgmental and open-minded insight and assistance in exploring the varying concerns that you bring to counselling.

Beginning from a person centered foundation, I use trauma-informed, attachment, somatic and mindfulness-based frameworks in my practice.
It takes courage to begin the counselling process. When you make the choice to work through painful feelings, to change damaging behaviours, or to build stronger relationships, your life improves in many ways. My role is to provide a counselling relationship that allows you to feel safe to share your experiences, feelings and thoughts. I offer a confidential space, support and feedback in order to help you to make the changes you identify. I am passionate about supporting people in building their capacity to connect with the wisdom of their body and emotions and to return to a felt sense of safety and connection to self.

I currently work from various modalities such as transpersonal psychology, somatic therapy, mindfulness, and internal family systems (parts work), to help you gain a deeper understanding of your strengths and increase resilience.
My ideal person to work with is one who has done some personal work already and is wanting to dive deeper. I am often sought out when people have been through the system and are looking for a more compassionate and empowering perspective than what is often offered. Without condoning or promoting the use of any substances, I do work from a harm reduction perspective and support prep and integration of psychedelic experiences as well as harm reduction coaching and consulting for microdosing. I do group ceremonies with breathwork and come from an anti-oppression framework.

My therapy approach provides an integrative and trauma-informed lens using modalities such as CBT, Mindfulness & EMDR.
With over 17 years experience supporting mental health and grief, I am known for helping others feel comfortable with the sometimes-intimidating experience of therapy. We all carry with us life experiences that can decrease our ability to cope at any given time. I see therapy as a time to engage in self-care and a place where one can begin healing and learn ways to cope with life’s ongoing challenges. I can help you uncover patterns that may be holding you back, validate your experiences, and collaborate with you to work toward your goals. Also, as a Social Worker, I am able to connect clients with other resources in the community.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
