There are so many issues that men experience that many therapists do not pay attention to. I get it, it's not easy managing all your different roles. I assume, as a kid, you were taught that "men don't cry". Having no emotions, or "just deal with it" was encouraged by others. Now, as an adult, you may be accused of "being heartless" or "emotionless". Maybe you feel lost, angry, or confused. You've been through a lot, and there isn't a place for you to work to make sense of everything that is going on. You've tried so many strategies, but your attempts only leave you feeling like a failure

You’ve been under-performing in the bedroom and the doctors aren’t able to help. You find yourself worrying about erections, or how long it will take you to ejaculate. That worry started in the bedroom, but now it’s always there. Maybe you find yourself creating distance from your partner because you’re worried it will happen again. You don’t want to disappoint your partner, but how could they not take it personally? Maybe you avoid dating all together, wondering “who is going to want to be with someone who can’t perform in the bedroom?” You feel like less of a man. You feel like a sexual failure. You think “I must be the only one"

You: "I am READY to feel better." Me: "Right on. I've got the tools. Let's get to work." This whole therapy business may seem a little weird to you, but you have been feeling a deep lack of connection to the things that really matter to you and you don't want to keep feeling this way. You've had some struggles earlier in your life, or more recently, that have impacted how you relate to others and how you related to the world in general, and you're not liking how this restriction, this disconnect feels. You've wanted to be a better coworker, partner, or father, and you're feeling really ready to invest the time to make it happen.

Are you navigating the age old question of “who am I?” Perhaps you walk around with the idea that there is something wrong with you or you're fundamentally flawed. Maybe you’re trying to make sense of your messed up past or childhood. You may beat yourself up for being: not enough, wrong or bad. You may deal with outbursts of anger or be a chronic people pleaser. Perhaps you feel you’re being “too much," your emotions are "too big for the situation," or you may just not even understand them. You’re looking for someone to do the deeper work with – you don’t want fluff, you want to figure yourself out. Let’s do just that.

You love your partner, but find yourself wondering “what happened to us?”. You just keep waiting for things to get better on their own, but they don’t. You barely recognize yourself or your partner anymore. Maybe you find yourself fantasizing about leaving the relationship all together. Things in the bedroom are even worse. My main area of focus is helping eliminate abuse in interpersonal relationships, from as seemingly "light" as bickering to more escalated confrontations. I've worked with perpetrators (males and females) of domestic violence for nine years, helping people as they work to re-establish healthier relationships with partners and family members again, or start new relationships better. Much of this is developing communication and empathy skills, all in the context of understanding yourself better and, often, your life experiences you've had that have brought you to this point.

Men's Issues Counsellors

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
