I prioritize transgender, 2S, and nonbinary survivors.
From adapted Internal Family Systems, all people have parts, all parts are good, and all parts or alters are equally important and valuable leaders. We can support your headmates to communicate with each other and to access what each needs to be more comfortable. I help people experience harmony and functional multiplicity, including non-traumagenic systems.

I work primarily with the queer community, and specifically with transgender folks navigating their identity and the transition process.
Life can be difficult - we all go through struggles as we navigate the ups and downs of our experience. This can be further complicated when we're a member of a minority or marginalized group. As a queer woman myself, I am passionate about working with other queer individuals to help them explore and discover who they are, and how they want to express themselves in the world. Whether you're struggling with your sexuality, gender identity, depression, anxiety, or just having a hard time managing stress and life changes - I'm here to help!

Stardust is a queer-owned collective of mental health workers trying to make counselling more accessible and affirming to folks experiencing systemic oppression. All of our team members have lived experience with mental health issues and/or neurodivergence, and we recognize the role that oppression plays in causing and aggravating mental health stuff. We work from a trauma-informed, intersectional and social justice-focused framework. We believe in harm reduction and are strongly sex and sex-worker positive, kink positive, familiar with non-traditional relationship dynamics, body-positive, and anti-capitalist.

You're so functional. As far as anyone on the outside knows, you're holding it all together. But the truth is, in the quiet moments, you're restless, stressed, panicked and so unsure of yourself. There's the occasional sleepless night, the anger that comes for you when you're alone, and the illogical conflicts that stir up between you and your friends and strangers alike. It isn't a mystery where most of this has come from; the trauma you've experienced in your life has shaped you. But really, you want the kind of freedom that helps you move beyond acting like a shell of yourself and into the person you hope you can become.

Perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed by the current state of the world and all its grieving parts or you’ve been meaning to start this journey for a while now. Maybe you've noticed a repeating of patterns in relationships, causing you upset and overwhelm. Though there will likely be tough moments, it is my hope that your time in therapy will also feel supportive, dynamic, playful, empowering and affirming. No matter what you bring with you, we can move through it all and make sense of it, together.

Life often comes at us in ways that leave little room to breathe, feel, and reflect. This can create a cycle of survival that forces us to simply 'get over' what impacts us. I support clients in slowing down and tending to their mental and emotional well-being. I help clients understand the experiences that influence how they move through the world, foster compassion for how they have survived thus far, and develop new ways to care for themselves. I also gently challenge those I work with to recognize and lean into their strengths.

Are you thinking about taking steps towards healing and growth? My practice is guided by principles of integrity, non-judgement, collaboration, curiosity and compassion. I view my clients holistically, and regard what they bring to therapy as subject to nuance. I spent over 10 years doing community-based harm reduction work. I am well-versed in working with clients to build an atmosphere where they feel safe, equipped, and empowered to address and overcome their unique challenges. I understand that such spaces can only be created by actively listening to and applying feedback from my clients and adapting my practice accordingly.

You are a high achiever who does what it takes to get ahead. You've been described as industrious, passionate, serious, and intense. You are the person your friends and family come to with their problems as you appear to have it all together. You are holding so much for everyone else, but you feel so alone. Below this confident exterior, anxiety brews. You are a deeply feeling person and yet sometimes feel unseen. Your inner critic can be loud and it often tells you that you're not enough. I am here to help you discover why you feel this way, to hold space, and to explore the inner workings of your multi-layered self.

I spent about 10 years in the highest burnout sectors of social work. From this experience, I have developed a keen trauma-informed perspective, supporting populations navigating systemic barriers and compounded complex mental health. I have also worked with a large breadth of mental health diagnoses, within every category of the DSM, from a client-centered and strengths based framework. With this experience, and practicing therapy modalities that are transferable to various mental health difficulties, I would say that I am a generalist.

Transgender Counsellors

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
