Your religion,
spirituality
, or culture has become a source of distress, or even suffering—rather than of strength. You’re struggling with feeling pressured to make choices based on cultural/religious expectations and beliefs that don’t work for you, with conflicts in interfaith or multicultural relationships, or perhaps whether to leave or join a religious community. You’ve found yourself thinking, "I don't know who I am anymore, or what I'm doing with my life." Relentless uncertainty or confusion can leave you feeling too drained to cope with life, much less enjoy it. At this point, you just want to feel "not broken."

As we collaborate to explore your inner world and take meaningful steps toward your goals, I will hold a lens that acknowledges the complex intersections of your culture, race,
spirituality
, and identity.
How do you move forward when you long to break cycles in your personal or relational life, but can't seem to make it happen? In the face of overwhelming emotions, how do you find your way back to a baseline of ease and alignment with your values? If these questions stir something in you, I’m glad you’re here. I help adults who are feeling emotionally "stuck" to break cycles and heal trauma by befriending your emotions, regulating your nervous system, and tapping into your body's innate wisdom and resources, so that you can shift out of survival mode into a state of enriching connection to yourself and others.

His retreat was a complex design that combined psychology, mindfulness, music,
spirituality
, connection and introspection.
Testimony of a client: I don’t say this lightly: Alex changed my life. He has had more impact in my life than any other mentor, coach or therapist. He has been able to help me overcome trauma, fears and limiting beliefs by offering his own vulnerability, his deep understanding of his craft and humility. As an actor, it has directly influenced my career and the most important relationships in my life. The change comes from the relationship he is willing to build with you over time.

This, combined with my personal interest in
spirituality
, philosophy, and finding meaning in life helps me assist my clients with focusing on their needs and strengths, and achieving their goals through recovery.
I started counselling with two goals in mind: To help others improve their quality of life and help them become the best version of themself they can be. Having lived experience, I know firsthand what people are going through. I want to be one less professional someone goes to for help and leaves feeling stigmatized, unheard, or worse. I work with a trauma-informed approach and see my clients as individuals who are trying to cope with problems in their life and feel like they can’t without the use of alcohol or drugs. I’ve seen how recovery can create new beginnings and give people the life they want and deserve for themselves.

Also, I am an experienced Pastoral Counsellor, skilled in working with issues of faith and
spirituality
as they arise in clients' lives, if faith and
spirituality
are important to them.
Life can be challenging. Most of us can have problems in our relationships with partners, family members, co-workers, or children at some point in our lives. Sometimes we struggle with what is going on inside of us, feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, guilt, sadness or anger. Often when we struggle alone, the problem becomes overwhelming. Sometimes we need someone to talk to. Someone who will listen, not judge and offer a response that will be helpful. I see my role as being there for folks who need a listening ear. I offer care and a safe place within which healing, growth and resolution are possible.

Particularly those who struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, identity, relationships, and
spirituality
.
Hi, my name is Elizabeth Idowu and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). My aim is to provide a safe space where my clients can feel seen and heard, as they embark on a journey towards peace, progress and healing. As a Nigerian-Canadian woman, I have both personally endured and been exposed to the struggles of others who look like me and share similar experiences. That is why I make it a priority to create and hold space for those who may struggle with their identity, and relate to experiences of feeling unheard and unseen.

“Whether we’re overcoming adversity, surviving trauma or dealing with stress or anxiety, having a sense of purpose, meaning, and perspective in our lives allows us to develop understanding and move forward. Without purpose, meaning and perspective, it is easy to lose hope, numb our emotions or become overwhelmed by our circumstances. We feel reduced, less capable, and lose in the face of struggle. The heart of
spirituality
is connection. When we believe in that inextricable connection, we don’t feel alone.” – Brene Brown

People deserve to feel heard and valued, especially when facing the storms of life, so I work to create a presence that honours this. I use a person-centred and trauma-informed perspective, seeking to honour each persons own unique experiences related to their particular intersectionalities. Working also from a spiritually-integrated perspective allows me to explore with clients the aspect and impact of spiritual wellness, with interspiritual and intercultural sensitivity. In my practice I often seek to invite nature into sessions, either through walk and talk therapy or through working with my trained American kestrel, Brigit.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
