“How are you?” is a question many of us get asked several times a day, yet, the person asking is usually not interested in the honest answer to the question. I am. As a certified clinical trauma specialist, I am able to use a trauma-informed lens that highlights one’s strengths and resilience and allows for them to explore their experiences in a safe environment. Additionally, I use an informed approach when working with
adults
in areas regarding sex, sexual identity, sexual education, and general sexual therapy. I aim to create a safe space, one of compassion, empathy, and care, using a person-centered, integrative approach.

Accepting NEW Clients. Hi! I’m Ash (they/them). I work with youth (17+) and
adults
who are living with anxiety, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, OSFED), substance use concerns, and depression. Are you someone who experiences strong emotions, but doesn’t always manage them in helpful ways? Perhaps you respond impulsively at times and engage in actions that are inconsistent with how you want to show up for yourself or others. At other times, you might become overwhelmed by feelings like anxiety, fear, or shame and then withdraw or avoid doing things that could bring you joy or move you closer to recovery.

I work with
adults
struggling with ADHD or attentional issues who are looking to simplify the way they engage in their daily activities. Adult ADHD can impact many aspects of life, with challenges ranging from scheduling and prioritizing time, organizing workspaces, filtering environmental stimuli, and regulating emotions. These difficulties can lead to feeling overwhelmed, always behind, and consistently disorganized. I help clients organize the chaos and engage in the activities they want to do, like to do, and/or are expected to do. No official ADHD diagnosis required. Please note I cannot complete diagnostic assessment.

Have you been feeling overwhelmed by change, fearful of the unknown, and in a place of internal conflict with no end in sight? Do you find yourself fixating on your imperfections, burnt out and constantly trying to control situations? The weight of the world feels heavy on your shoulders and is leaving you feeling unmotivated, easily triggered, stressed out or self-critical. Navigating change, loss and competing priorities can be really hard, and you may find this has been impacting your relationships and self-esteem. Setting boundaries with yourself and others, and prioritizing self-care may feel near impossible.

Currently, we are living in a world that is at best tense, and finding our peace is a daily struggle. In our lives, we are encouraged to, told, and at times, forced to continue as if nothing is happening or seriously wrong. In my practice, I provide space for open dialogue and a holistic approach to therapy which encourages recovery and healing. In my over 17 years of working as a clinical social worker with youths and
adults
ranging from diverse & intersectional backgrounds, I have learned that the space we create together in combination with the relational work is the most important.

adults
if you or an older sibling needs your own mental health supports.
Hello! I'm Dr. Chang, a Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychologist who has worked/trained at multiple hospitals across Ontario. When you start to see changes in your child, whether that may be restrictive eating behaviours (e.g., cutting out sweets, eating smaller portions), compulsive behaviours (e.g., handwashing), social withdrawal, or avoidance of things they enjoy, it can be hard to know what to do. Many parents start to worry that their child may have anxiety, depression, ocd, or an eating disorder and want to find support.

I identify as queer and enjoy working with youth and
adults
exploring sexuality and gender.
My goal as a therapist is to create a connection that allows for curiosity, risk-taking, fun and emotional safety so that you feel empowered to share in sessions. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, life-transitions, grief, relationship issues, or questions around identity I would love to explore this with you. I enjoy connecting people to their emotions and will often aim to increase connection between your emotions and your body so you feel empowered to express your feelings and increase self-trust. Emotions have important information for us and feeling them in the presence of another is sometimes all that's needed.

How can I find a therapist in Hamilton?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
