Hi! I'm Sylvia. I am currently accepting new clients. I specialize in working with BIPOC, first generation Canadians reconciling immigrant parental values versus Canadian ones, women undergoing a period of peri and post partum concerns, and, anyone undergoing anxiety and depression. At Durand Integrated Health Group, we believe counselling should be made available to any person regardless of their mental health challenges, daily struggles, sexuality, race, abilities, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status or other. We strive to provide a safe and confidential space to share your thoughts and feelings. WE DO NOT HAVE A WAIT LIST. SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE.
I find therapy can be a branch that reaches in, something strong you use to pull yourself from a harsh inner world to more solid ground. If you feel overwhelmed or raw, what you're experiencing isn't a problem with who you are. Plenty is hard in this world. Add in factors like your history, systemic barriers, learned habits, vulnerabilities, perhaps traumas, or feelings that overwhelm your capacities right now - it can be exhausting. At best. The hopeful news is that you can change your experience: gain understanding and strength, create your solid ground, and move in a direction that's in line with what matters to you.
I hear you & I believe in you! I believe therapy allows people to share their stories and feel their emotions in an environment that is safe and considers their unique needs. I strive to validate people’s emotions (because they are understandable), to highlight their strengths (because sometimes people can’t see them) and to build hope (because it can be restored).
I strive to create a safe, compassionate, respectful and non-judgmental space; one where you feel comfortable to freely explore and express your inner reality. I bring humour and curiousity to the therapy relationship, integrating a relational, client-centered, trauma-informed and emotionally-focused approach. Collaboratively, I hope to help you make sense of your story (however messy that is or has been) and to re-author it, to help you draw on your internal resources, to shine a light on the potential that you know you have, and to be in a secure and supportive relationship with you while you move towards a life of authenticity.
We are all evolving! People usually come to see me because a crisis has happened. The origin of the word crisis means turning point. If you are experiencing a turning point in your life I can help you navigate. Sometimes when a crisis hits we find it hard to process what is happening because we are full of the emotional and mental confusion. Therapy helps to unravel the confusion so you can awaken to the awareness that comes with the turning point. Growing in awareness can create a whole new perspective.
I provide therapy for indivduals who struggle with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, anger mangement, relationship problems, low self esteem, trauma, childhood physical or sexual abuse histories, grief and loss, body image, eating disorders or life transitions. My approach as a psychotherapist is to provide a safe and empathic space for each client to be able to explore whatever struggles may be preventing them from living a life of authenticity, meaningfulness, and joy.
Extensive experience working with first responders (police, corrections, medic, fire, 911 communication workers) frontline health care and the military and veteran population. I have provided psychological assessment and treatment to adults and couples since 2004. My treatment focus includes utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions, such as CBT, CPT, EMDR, prolonged exposure and other trauma treatment modalities. Clinically, my broad range of experience includes working with individuals and couples struggling with mood disorders, anxiety, bereavement and trauma.
And your chest clenched for attention. Skin crawling desperation. To call in sick, or to stay in bed, or to numb out with distractions that you do not feel proud of. Maybe you feel nausea or fear or shame, or an emptiness that aches inside you. Or anxiety that rarely seems to settle. Maybe you have repetitive or consuming thoughts of how incompetent or unworthy you are. Maybe you just feel simply exhausted. People come to see me to move away from feelings of overwhelm, to begin to know and trust themselves (and others) again, to begin to feel better in their lives (as they define it).
Sometimes life can feel challenging and hard. Sometimes we don’t know where our journey is taking us. Sometimes we might lose ourselves a little along the way. This is when we need to slow down and take a deep breath. Reaching out for support can be a very effective way to feel less alone and figure out your next steps. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your emotions and remember who you are. As a therapist, I have experience in supporting individuals with concerns such as, anxiety, depression, coping with stress, grief, relationship issues, navigating life transitions and managing emotions.
I work with individuals and couples struggling with a wide variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, past trauma, grief, low self-esteem and life transitions. Therapy can heal old wounds, change unwanted thoughts or behaviors and improve relationships with yourself and others. I offer a safe, respectful and nonjudgmental environment, where you may expect to be treated with compassion and empathy.
