Have you tried talk therapy, but still feel "stuck"? Are you looking for an experience of therapy that includes your body, spirit, mind, and helps you embody your wholeness? Somatic therapy is a body-based, trauma-oriented approach that goes beyond talking and offers experiential practices that can gently reshape the nervous system survival patterning (trauma) that loops in our bodies.
The Feeling Space is operated by Emily Barrie, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), Integrative Somatic Therapist (ISTP), birthworker, and trauma yoga teacher. I help folks de-stigmatize big emotions, neutralize and nurture the charge of pain and discomfort in their bodies, and invite wisdom in from the parts we may have been taught to avoid.

I offer EMDR, Polyvagal lens, Somatic, CBT, and DBT.
I specialize in going beyond traditional talk therapy to help people struggling in relationships feel empowered to live authentic lives. I believe change shouldn’t be so hard to live better, people can change, there is hope and answers to live better, people can change, there is hope and answers. I start with understanding your family of origin, by uncovering some beliefs and values that may need to be shelved and others highlighted. The transition from chaos to comfort begins with a feeling of safety and security. I believe in a relationship between therapist and client that can tolerate mess and still have a safe container.

Going beyond traditional talk therapy, I use somatic (body-based) psychotherapy in healing trauma, including developmental trauma - childhood abuse, neglect, or caregiver misattunement.
Before healing from traumatic experiences, you might feel like you're often in a fight-or-flight state (anxious, irritable, angry, can't sleep) or feel shut down (numb, no energy, dissociated, or depressed). I use Somatic Experiencing and other somatic approaches for trauma-focused work, and to treat anxiety and cumulative stress.

I work through the following lenses: Trauma, Attachment, Somatic, Solution Focus Therapy (SFT), Sex Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Therapy can be scary and choosing a therapist that matches your needs that much more difficult. I trust in a collaborative work and that you are the expert of your life. I am merely a mirror, which will reflect your thoughts and feelings and allows an opportunity to gently challenge and create new changes. I strive to provide a safe and brave space where you can explore and re-discover your most authentic self. Together we will laugh, cry and conquer. I believe in the power of hope, individual resiliency, and pets.

Some of the evidence-based therapeutic modalities I pull from include: DBT, EFT, Narrative, Mindfulness Based CBT, ACT, Gottman, Mindful Self-Compassion, Biopsychosocial, Somatic, & many others!.
If you're waiting for a sign, this is it. I'm so glad you're here! The human experience is HARD. Unresolved grief and trauma can leave us feeling disconnected from our true selves and stuck in a cycle of shame. I focus on meeting clients where they are at and providing a collaborative, safe space to allow you to say things you haven't been able to express before, and support you in figuring out how to live a more authentic, fulfilling life, while processing how your past has shaped and impacted you in many ways- but does not define you or your future!

Using trauma-focused modalities, such as EMDR, IFS, and somatic therapy, I help you feel better and heal from trauma, anxiety, grief, and addictions.
Have you experienced a stressful or traumatic life event that has impacted your ability to focus or cope with the everyday? Trauma continues to live in our systems long after the event has happened, sometimes remaining hidden until something triggers it to come to the surface. Trauma can reveal itself in a variety of ways, including physical pain, lead to anxiety, depression, attachment or relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, addictions, and can impact our perceptions leading to unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours. My clients report a reduction in their symptoms, describe feeling calmer, lighter, and more present.

Through a blend of somatic therapy, third wave cognitive behavioural techniques, and compassionate dialogue, I offer a safe space to explore, reconnect, and cultivate clarity, confidence, and growth.
We'll first address the challenges that make daily life more difficult such as overthinking, emotional dysregulation, or a sense of disconnection from the body. Next, we'll explore the deeper roots of these struggles and where they may stem from. Finally, we'll focus on sustaining meaningful change and enhance resiliency for life's inevitable ups and downs.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
