Society tells us becoming a parent should to be natural, joyful, and will happen within our desired timeline. For some there is truth to this, but many parents are left disoriented with the gap between their expectations and reality. We are urged to pour into our children, give them all of our attention, but also find time for ourselves and our relationship. The challenges of this stage of life can leave parents feeling lonely, overwhelmed and with a sense of personal failure. You might wonder who you even are anymore and if things will ever change - If you are struggling, you are not alone, and it doesn’t have to stay this way.

Whether it be you or a loved one, most of us have experienced some form of struggle or loss. In today’s fast-paced world many of us are also juggling the competing demands of work and home life; both have become further complicated by technology and social media. We live in a world where we are more connected, yet lonelier than ever. For those with children, we are inundated with parenting advice, leaving us questioning whether we are doing enough, or doing it right. With all the information overload it can be difficult to know where to get started when it comes to our emotional health.

I work with adults who want freedom from negative patterns and who want to get to the root of repetitive reactivity and triggers. They want calm and peace. They want help with healthy boundaries, anxiety, self-worth, depression, life direction, co-dependency, communication, addiction, relationships (with self, the Divine, life partner, ex-partner, children, family, co-workers), emotional regulation, grief, loss/divorce, chronic pain, parenting, spiritual growth and psychedelic integration. The need for connection emerges from our very core. Though we are social beings, when our core is wounded or in pain, we may instinctively attempt to protect ourselves, even from our nearest and dearest companions. Whether we’re going through a particularly challenging time in life or facing our usual day-to-day stressors, counselling can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I work with children, youth and adults learning to: respond skillfully to emotional distress; adjust to expected and unexpected life transitions; process grief and loss; and manage parenting demands and expectations.

When life’s challenges feel like they’ve become too much, you might find that you’re struggling to manage work, relationships and parenting; you may feel isolated and have difficulty connecting with your partner; perhaps you feel stuck in the same old thoughts and behavioural patterns; or you have a hard time recognizing your old self. When this happens, knowing which way to turn, or reaching out for support can feel daunting.

Are you feeling disconnected to yourself, loved ones, or society? Do you question whether you are a good father, son, or partner? Do you feel angry, stuck, overwhelmed, powerless, guilty, or "not normal". Many men struggle with their mental health without seeking help or reaching out for support. Often, this struggle may lead to addiction, anxiety, depression, shame, guilt, suicidal ideation, poor relationships, grief, low self-esteem, or low self-worth. You are not alone! What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
