While becoming a parent can bring joy and fulfillment, the changes and stressors that accompany the perinatal period can also have substantial impacts on a parent ’s mental health. Nothing can easily prepare parents for this new role which we often enter with preconceived notions, notions that can differ dramatically from the lived reality. It can contribute to changes in our mental health, create stressors within our relationships, and impact our ability to cope. We may feel a sense of disappointment or disillusionment that parenting isn’t what we envisioned and it is not uncommon to long for our pre- parenting life and identity.

As a parent , you want to enjoy motherhood and not be overwhelmed with guilt, depression or anxiety, and stress.
You're a new mom, and when asked by everyone, "are you loving motherhood?" a flood of guilt comes over you because the honest answer is "not really..." Maybe you are expecting a baby and are already experiencing anxiety, depression, or conflict with your partner. The stressors of a new baby and parenting can be incredibly difficult, and in our society it is common to have a difficult birth and an overwhelming postpartum period. It doesn't have to be like that. I am here to help you create birth and postpartum experiences that will leave you feeling triumphant instead of traumatized.

Life can be really challenging. Family dynamics and difficult personalities can make you feel like you’re reliving painful moments from the past. Being a parent , or trying to become one, can bring heartache and frustration. Infertility, loss, illness and anxiety can make life feel heavy, difficult, and rid you of vitality. This is where I come in to help. I can take you to better places. Healing doesn’t mean the pain never existed; it means the pain no longer controls our lives. I will create a space where you will feel safe and unconditionally supported to explore your thoughts, feelings, and worries, without judgement.

Sometimes the stories we tell (and are being told) about ourselves keep us stuck in suffering. As a psychotherapist, I view my role in therapy as someone who can walk with clients as they discover new ways to re-write their own stories. I primarily work with women on issues such as identity transitions in becoming a parent , pregnancy, and new parent /caregiver support. I also have a special interest in supporting adult clients of any gender in other areas such as attachment and relationship pattern exploration, self-compassion/acceptance building, and adoptive/foster parent support.

The need for connection emerges from our very core. Though we are social beings, when our core is wounded or in pain, we may instinctively attempt to protect ourselves, even from our nearest and dearest companions. Whether we’re going through a particularly challenging time in life or facing our usual day-to-day stressors, counselling can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I work with children, youth and adults learning to: respond skillfully to emotional distress; adjust to expected and unexpected life transitions; process grief and loss; and manage parenting demands and expectations.

Getting connected to a therapist can be hard. I ask you to contact with basic information, your availability and a phone number and I will connect with you (please advise me if I can leave a message on any phone contact you provide and/or if I can respond via your email provided (this allows a quick response). When we connect we discuss your needs, my qualifications and our working together. My approach to counselling is informal/goal focused. Taking on only a few clients allows me to genuinely focus. What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
