Still today, there can be a great deal of negative stigma associated with mental health struggles and that can make it difficult for people to seek therapy or know where to start. I was inspired by a close friend years ago to seek therapy even though I was so reluctant. I chose counselling as a profession because I want to provide the same safe, non-judgmental relationship for my clients that helped me to break down that stigma in my own therapy experience. My ideal client is ready to do the work to gain a better understanding of their struggles and move forward with better tools for managing them.

Psychotherapy can help when: a life issue causes heartache, you want to improve yourself in some way, or life has become unbearable as it is. Meaningful progress will come from the relationship we will develop, including feeling understood as a unique individual. Feeling accepted for all that you are - both successes and failures - enables you to look at hard-to-face places about yourself, and discover new perspectives. A stronger sense of yourself will develop, and you will make clearer decisions that are right for your particular life. You will come to see yourself differently, and others will experience you differently.

I specialize in ADHD & Asperger's/Autism Spectrum Disorder and also have experience working with social & general anxiety, trauma, depression, suicidal feelings, substance abuse, video game addiction, stress, and relationship concerns (family, romantic, and friendships). Working with neurodivergent kids, adults, couples, & families is very important to me because I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and struggled a lot without proper support. I get how frustrating navigating the mental health and education systems can be and want to support others in learning to harness their amazing abilities and make lasting positive change.

I work with individuals seeking guidance, emotional support, mental clarity, harmony in mind and body. Whether experiencing relationship conflict, stress, grief, trauma or seeking new perspectives and fresh solutions on your life journey, the essence of my approach is to provide a safe, supportive base where you can explore, understand, and heal issues causing discomfort and imbalance in your life. Physical limitations, social discomfort, and the challenge of living in a fast-paced changing world all contribute to "dis-ease" in the body/mind. This can present itself in the form of anxiety, depression, chronic pain, insomnia, eating disorders, addiction and more.

Connecting with a therapist can be a difficult step - but for many people, it's a step to growth, healing and change. Worries, stress and hurtful experiences can feel overwhelming. I support clients from all walks of life with warmth, compassion, and non-judgment. Together, we can start to understand what's been going on for you, and together, we can find strategies and tools that can help you cope. My work is grounded in feminist and anti-oppressive practices, and my approach is queer positive, harm-reduction focused and body positive. I have particular interest in working with trauma survivors and 2SLGBTQ+ folks.

How can I find a therapist in Guelph?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
