If you are navigating the waters of
depression
, grief, stress, anxiety, self-harm, or suicidal ideation, we may be a good fit.
“I can’t keep living this way, but I don’t know how to change.” Does this statement sound familiar to you? Once upon a time, I felt this way too. Therapy was my safe space to land, and now I hope to offer a safe space in return for the teens and adults I work with. Perhaps you are experiencing a particularly difficult season of change in your life, or maybe you are hoping to better understand yourself and work towards a wellness goal. Together, we can work to discover your strengths, unpack your past experiences and, as a team, make a plan for the life you hope to build.

depression
, recovery from interpersonal trauma/ abuse, neglect, communication issues (for e.g. bosses, friends, partners. family members) stress of everyday life, grief, couple issues, childhood attachment issues, PTSD and dissociative disorders.

This fall, I am increasing my private practice hours to offer therapy to people who need more than what they can access through short term services. I have worked in mental health and employee assistance programs (EAP), and enjoy doing longer term therapy. Primarily, I work with adults who are struggling with mental health issues, including
depression
, anxiety, and trauma, couples with relationship concerns, and people who have life changes they are working through. In my practice, I take an anti-oppression, culturally informed stance to peoples' issues and experiences. I am committed to ongoing professional development.

I work with clients who are struggling with anxiety,
depression
and low mood as well as perfectionism & negative self-talk. I have significant experience in as well as a particular passion for working with post-secondary students. From my experience working at various Colleges and Universities, I have a deep understanding of the unique challenges, stressors, and unseen mental toll being a student can take. I particularly enjoy working with clients who are curious about the impact of their childhood on their current-day suffering & are motivated to not only make changes to ease suffering, but to also find more joy in their life.

We live in challenging times. If you struggle with anxiety,
depression
or burnout or feel that sometimes you 'care' too much, then it's important to have a safe place for you to express your thoughts and emotions. Healing can occur on many levels, and finding more balance in your life can allow you to discover who you really are and how to live according to your values and sense of purpose. If you are a caregiver, activist or find yourself thinking a lot about issues in the world and feeling overwhelmed, learning how to manage distressing thoughts and emotions can be life-changing.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you or someone you love is suffering in some way. But the good news is that things will get better, and I hope to help you (or them) get to better times. I work with adults, young adults, youth, and children, and have done so for the past decade (and it’s been the best decade of my life so far). The challenges we work on include
depression
, anxiety, childhood trauma, coping with life changes, and many more. If you or someone you love could use a friendly ear and a helping hand, you may find the therapy modalities I am trained in helpful.

I support people to find peace and stability in their lives by looking at factors that may be contributing to anxiety,
depression
, and mood dysregulation. Digestive issues, stress, hormonal imbalances, sleep difficulties, neurotransmitter imbalances, lifestyle, genetics, and environment all have profound effects on mood and psychological health.

Anxiety,
depression
, stress, burnout, and a lack of enthusiasm are signs that you may be off your path of your fullest joy, contentment, connection and fulfillment.
You may not yet know what you are looking for. All you know is that you want something to change. Or, you know exactly what you are looking for, what specifically you want to change, and this is why you are seeking someone like me. Either place is a great place to start. My job is to support you to envision the life you long for that you are not yet living, and to support you to take the steps to create it. You can do this. Along the journey, it is helpful to have a guide and a map. This is where I come in. I can provide both.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
