You're branching out - maybe you've started school or moved away from home, and you begin to realize that not all families function like yours.... sound familiar? This 'aha' moment can bring about all sorts of confusion and hurt about the way that we were raised. At Everworth Counselling, I help young adults who grew up in chaotic homes, with emotionally immature parents, and/or with childhood trauma to better understand their upbringing, how it impacted them, and where to go from here.

I work primarily from a psychodynamic, relational, and attachment-based lens, incorporating somatic approaches.
Our lives are filled with contradictions: we have intimate relationships and yet we find ourselves holding back in different ways; we notice intense inner yearnings for change but struggle to move beyond the same patterns and repetitions. You may be coming to therapy with one particular issue in mind that you want to explore, or perhaps you're bringing a general sense of unease and stuck-ness that you find yourself in. Often times what initially brings us to work with someone can lead to many unexpected areas of exploration.

I take an attachment-based lens that focuses on root concerns stemming from childhood with a look at different cultural, societal, and heritage elements.
Accepting New Clients - What if you could rewrite the story that plays in your mind- and plays out in your life? Whether it’s big events or daily experiences from the past, your mind keeps revisiting painful memories. You may find the urge to avoid or numb the pain is intense. These thoughts, feelings, and patterns are impacting your current life and creating fear about your future. But the pain of your past doesn’t have to control your future. I offer you a safe and compassionate space to explore the root causes of these difficulties. By collaborating with me, we’ll empower you to move towards the next chapters of a brighter life.

I work with individuals who want to resolve their past trauma. These traumas may come from childhood or from other traumatic events that can take place in adulthood. They are seeking better self understanding and most of all healing. Many of my clients have tried various forms of talk therapy and want to try something different as they have not yet identified the root cause of their difficulties or only noticed marginal change. The unresolved trauma may be contributing to ongoing relationship problems, anxiety, depression, self esteem concerns, or complex/post traumatic stress.

Do you ever wonder, how did I get to this place in my life? Do you feel frustrated or exhausted repeating the same patterns over and over again? Are you tired of negative self talk sabotaging your efforts to change? Do you struggle with challenging relationships that affect how you handle day-to-day life? Now more than ever, women are feeling overwhelmed and 'stuck' trying to create more positive relationships with their loved ones while also identifying and taking care of their own needs and desires. I strongly believe that we all have the potential to change the way we connect with others and most importantly, with ourselves.

I am also trained in CBT, DBT, Attachment-Based Parenting, ASIST, and currently training in the Gottman Method to Couples Counselling.
I believe that challenges can be beautiful, albeit deeply painful, opportunities to create a life you feel inspired to live There is hope in every situation, and often life’s greatest lessons are learned during its biggest obstacles. Life's not always easy. Hardships and transitions can blindside you and leave you feeling like you’re just trying to survive, and on autopilot. And then the questions come: Who am I? How did I get here? The life you have doesn’t reflect the one you imagined. While we can not change the past, we can choose to create meaning in our experiences, and determine how its legacy comes forward with us.

The treatment types I draw on the most are person-centered, attachment-based, strength-based, and compassion focused.
Do you ever feel like you are your own worst critic? Do you have trouble ‘turning off’ the negative thoughts in your head? Or do you spend too much time worrying about the future or dwelling in the past? I work with adults who are experiencing low self-esteem, self-criticism, and anxiety. Putting the brakes on your busy life and slowing down to look inwards can help you from seeking distractions or unhealthy habits when feeling unwell. It takes courage to ask for help, explore meaningful questions, and demonstrate self-love. The way to self-love can have different meanings for each of us, depending on our life experience.

Life has uncertainty. We get hurt, confused, misunderstood. People we count on aren’t always there for us even if we reach out. Some of us de-stress with connection, some by being alone. This difference can leave us feeling abandoned or overwhelmed. Curiosity about ourselves helps us become more resilient, self aware, & relational. But not all problems get solved by random talking. My tools help you get unstuck and deepen your sense of intimacy with yourself and others. Your 1st time in therapy? We can make it comfortable and productive. Check out the articles I've published in Psychology Today and call for a no obligation consult.

I rely on various modalities, but 3 in particular: Somatic Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Internal Family Systems/IFS or parts work.
I am heavily informed and guided by queer, trans, neurodiverse, feminist, decolonial, and animist lineages. In practice, this means I treat everything that emerges in your world as having value. Our work together is to bring a specific quality of attention and witness to yourself and your current reality, in hopes of integrating it fully within your system.

Seeking therapy is a step towards self-awareness and healing. Recognizing we could benefit from a safe, unbiased space to unpack emotions, experiences, and thoughts, is a courageous and empowering decision. The differences between our rational and emotional brain can make us feel disconnected, and recognizing our internal dualities can be helpful. An equally empowering and healing experience is reconnecting with our inner child, which may be a wounded part of who we are. I look forward to supporting you by developing awareness and challenging self-destructive patterns. The easiest way to book an appointment is through our website.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
