Alcohol Use Therapists in Guelph, ON
One million Canadian men suffer from major depressive disorder each year. Three of every four completed suicides in Canada are by men. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is twice as high in men with another mental health diagnosis than in the general population. One third of Canadian men worry that talking about mental health at work could put their job at risk. Men are just as likely as women to have mental health issues yet are far less likely to utilize traditional mental health services. Men are more likely to believe that mental health services are difficult to access, ineffective and invasive. At Cogent, Ontario’s new mental health clinic focussed solely on supporting men, we’re changing that.

You’ve been stuck in a cycle that’s hard to explain to others. The anxiety is relentless, like a constant hum in the background that never lets you fully relax. You feel like no matter what you do, you’re never enough. It’s like there’s a wall between you and the life you wish you could live—the one where you’re confident and able to connect deeply with others. You find yourself holding back from opportunities, feeling trapped by your own thoughts, and watching from the sidelines as life keeps moving forward. It’s exhausting and lonely, and you’re wondering if anyone truly understands just how hard this is.

Life is hard. Everybody hurts- sometimes. Finding the way can be challenging. Often, it can help to talk to someone beyond our family and friends. Barbara believes we all have inner resources which are easier to find with the encouragement of a good listener. She brings a refreshing mix of common sense and compassion to her work. She believes that awareness is the key to liberation. With newfound clarity, we have choices we didn't realize. Barbara understands the courage it can take to make the call to talk to someone and learn to trust.

A client asked me once: Is therapy just TALKING? In a way it is. Just talking ... words, words, words. Sometimes words are meaningless and pointless. They lead to conflicts, misunderstandings, hurt, pain, crises. What could happen when words are meaningful, relevant, clear, aimed at understanding you and the other? What difference would it make when the right words are spoken, and they are heard at the right time? Would they make your wants, needs, wishes and dreams more real and attainable?

I also work with parents and their children as they manage the intense emotions during parental separation and divorce. My favourite therapeutic approaches include narrative (deconstructing the negative stories we hold about ourselves and our lives), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and mindfulness.

Now offering EMDR. Trauma can shake the way you interact with yourself, your loved ones and the world at large. I want to work with you to reconnect with yourself again. To feel safe enough to not just survive but to live. People living with trauma can carry a lot of shame and it can be difficult to talk about the things that you are facing. Therefore my goal as your therapist is to create a warm space for you to heal. In my work I embrace your natural gifts and incorporate creative forms of expression that come naturally to you into our therapeutic work.

We know that life can be very challenging at times and that the obstacles can seem overwhelming when facing them on your own. The therapists at Spacious Mind Counselling have been through their own trials and tribulations and have benefited from their own personal therapy during difficult times. We know that you are the expert in your life and that with the right conditions you can overcome the obstacles and challenges. We aim to provide a safe, non judgemental space where you can begin to understand the challenges for what they are and get back to living a rich and meaning full life. We do this by listening, asking questions and then creating goals with you that are in line with your values. Sometimes skills and tools are needed and other times processing traumas and unresolved emotions are needed. We will always follow your lead and provide insight and knowledge when you need it during sessions.

I specialize in ADHD & Autism Lvl. 1 and also have experience working with social & general anxiety, trauma, depression, suicidal feelings, substance abuse, video game addiction, stress, and relationship concerns (family, romantic, and friendships). Working with neurodivergent kids, adults, couples, & families is very important to me because I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and struggled a lot without proper support. I get how frustrating navigating the mental health and education systems can be and want to support others in learning to harness their amazing abilities and make lasting positive change.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
